With the 3 RB set of Sproles, Thomas and Ivory - does it seem now that the Ingram pick could have gone somewhere else.

It was a bad decision. No NFL team should ever, ever look to TRADE UP for a running back today. It's not a knock on Ingram, it's just that the RB position has lost so much of it's value over the last 5 to 10 years.

Somewhere along the way TE became more important than RB. That's crazy, but true.

and still do.

Ingram slid to the end of the first round for a reason, and had the Saints passed on him, he's probably mid/late second round.

I'd love to see us get a top pass rusher. Someone who will be in the QBs face every play.

It's his rookie year though on a shortened preseason. A very big part about being an RB in the nfl is picking up the blitz schemes that other teams throw at you. He barely got any practice in a mini camp or training camp, so that may have limited his reps.

Anyways, you can't ever have too many RBs because they get injured so easily, but trading up for ingram hasn't paid dividends yet.

I'm willing to give Mickey Loomis a pass right now, cause he's been so on point with other draft picks, but Ingram has a lot to prove in my opinion for the 2012-13 season.

To be Super Bowl contenders the next 3-4 years with Brees healthy. Last year just scared the hell out of the Saints in that they got to Seattle and didn't have a RB healthy.

It was hard to predict that Thomas would stay healthy and that Ivory would come back full strength, or that Sproles would be a huge difference maker. So the Saints wanted some insurance.

Considering their draft pick this year is going to be in the late 20's, its not a terrible price to pay for a 1st rounder.

Ingram has very little trade value right now, and he may end up being a bust, but it is way too early to tell.

The one offensive weakness the Saints have had during the Payton era has been in short yardage situations. That's why they got Ingram whose strength is yards after contact.

But his inability to stay healthy has made this a questionable pick. They could have used the help on defense.

we went to seattle with Julius Jones as our running back, i think ...we put like 6 or 7 backs on ir, last year
we needed a running back.

we ran for 133 a game this year
he had 122 carries for 474 avg 3.9 5tds

Mark Ingram 28th --122 474 3.9 5tds
Ryan Williams 38th --none
Shane Vereen 56th --15 57 3.9 1td
Mikel Leshore 57th --none
Demarco 71st --164 897 5.5 2td

I think it was a pretty solid pick. We will see going forward

I think keeps Thomas and Ivory expendable. Best 3rd/4th option in the NFL. Sean Payton has a way of bringing rookies in and limitingtheirroles initially and having them blow up after that. See Robert Meachem and Jimmy Graham.

The rest of the picks were used for defense, including Cam Jordan, who's been unspectacular, especially in rushing the passer. Pierre and (especially) Ivory were question marks coming off injury, they wanted to dump Bush's salary (and non-production) and the Sproles signing was three months away and uncertain. Arguably, they needed RB depth and he was probably the best available at the time.

but we drafted cameron jordan last year to go with smith

our biggest need would have to be OLB or corner right now...
I would much rather have a lock down - revis island corner on this team, so williams could really bring the house.

I think he is going to be a player for the Saints next season.

Ive been disappointed in the play of Sedrick Ellis who is invisible some games. Cameron Jordan has shown flashes, but for the most part doesn't seem to have a quick first step.

I didn't think it was a smart decision then and defintiely don't think it was smart now the way Thomas, Ivory and Sproles are playing. The Saints already havethe top offense in the league but needso many pieces on defense that,to me,any early round draft picks should be used on the best availble rush DE, DB or OLB.

I understand that Sproles had not yet signed, previous yearinjury issues at RBand the overall lack of ability to run the ball in short yardage situations are resonable explanations for the draft pick. However, I still would have liked to see them go in another direction. Good RBs can be found in later rounds or in free agency.

I thought it was a reach at the time to expend a 1st rounder on what I believed to be an above average, not elite back. I understand why the Saints executed the move after the Seattle debacle and the Brees window. Now, you have the Saints one of the top NFL rushing teams with healthy backs (Thomas, Ivory, and Sproles), 2 of which have injury histories (Thomas,Ivory). Seeing how hard Ivory and Thomas ran against Detroit, I like the move to get Ingram. Ingram's plays allowed less carries, more rest for the guys playing today. Setting all-time offensive records brings a tough argument in favor of the draft day move.

Looking ahead, the defense needs to be overhauled. I hope Jeff Fisher will grab Gregg Williams and Jack Del Rio will come home to lead the Saints defense. Tez Wilson does have a future here. The DL simply has not performed. The LB corp is getting younger and athletic, but we need a speed rusher. The secondary safety positions need more ball hawks (Sharper-type, Sammie Knight-type) rather than "where's-the-ball" Malcolm Jenkins players.

At the time, they had a HUGE question mark for a starter at running back. Had to be done, and it still may turn out well.

...Sproles was an off-season acquisition from San Diego; Sproles was expected to be a role player at best. Nobody anywhere saw Sproles emerging to have an all-pro season.

Ivory was hardly in the picture when Ingram was drafted. I think the Saints thought Ivory was washed up; again, nobody saw Ivory emerging the way he has.

Thomas was fighting off injuries. Again for the second time, nobody saw Thomas having this kind of year.

When Ingram was healthy he played hard.

As a rule of thumb, Heisman Trophy winners are busts in the NFL. That's the only roll of the dice I saw the Saints engaging when they drafted Ingram. But Ingram has gone against that rule of thumb.

I do not even get why you would question the Ingram draft.

he has been a non-factor most of the year. The entire d-line has been a tremendous disappointment. Ingram was a must-have for all of the reasons stated before. Running game was a gigantic question mark at the time.

In my opinion, this could be 3 or 4 years down the round to look at. Sproles has been such a great addition, i believe without him we would of seen a lot more out of Ingram..
