Ramsey and Owen in the backfield....who would a thunk it!!!! 74 players at Salem and 74 at Andrew lewis.
Well, that answered the question concerning Ramsey. Apparently he's back. Probably very motivated and anxious to show his ability. His talent will be felt on both sides of the ball.

How big on o line?
I'm pretty sure the OL consists of Mundy 6'3" 300, Cardwell is 6-0, 265, Grinnell is 6-0, 265, and Compton is 6-0, 270. I think Overstreet is getting first crack at the other guard. He's about 200 I think. Good size this year and if Overstreet is used on the OL he's smaller than the other linemen but is quicker. He's a pitcher for the baseball team so he's pretty athletic and smart. I think he will do a good job whichever side of the ball he's on.

From the clips I saw last year of the JV team I figured that they would be big this year. Especially with two big returners. This the biggest line I can remember in many years. Ramsey, Owen would be a pretty nasty backfield to deal with behind that line.

Van Richardson playing DE?
Yeah I believe he will be in a DE or OLB spot like he was last year. In Salem's defensive scheme it's sometimes difficult for me to tell the difference because of where they lineup.

Defense will need to play well early. It will take a few games for qb to get going. Defense and running game will have to do the job first six or seven games

Salem might have a big line one year and then a small line the next. It doesn't matter. These kids are Mules and they embrace it. Mag demands darn near perfection. The line wasn't big last year, but we had a 1st team all 4A Guard, a 2nd team All 4A West TE and a 1st team all-conference Center. Not too shabby! The mules this season will be bringing the beef with some experienced talent in the backfield behind them.

Losing Briton hurts. He showed a lot of promise at linebacker and fullback. However, Pinnello is also a good looking athlete who should do well at linebacker.

Salem may have to find some creative ways to get ball to Tucker. Return game should be excellent with Owen and Tucker.

I realize I am going to catch a ton grief for this post, but honestly I have to speak my mind. Yes, this is my first post, but I have been following Virginia Preps for years. I was always taught to start with something positive, so here I go. As a former Salem player and current fan I am very proud of the Spartan’s accomplishments on the field. Like most Salem fans I can be very boastful and aside from the Hampton Crabbers, in my eyes, the Salem Spartans are the most consistent and successful football program in VHSL history. As a player, I was not fortunate to enjoy these successes on the field, but as a fan I have journeyed far and wide to see our boys play.

Now for the negative. I have been following numerous post regarding the Salem program this summer and I must admit I am a bit disturbed by some of them. No, let me be frank and use the word disappointed. Just this week, the “Great and Powerful Oz”, Three Putt, made the statement “Ramsey and Owen in the same backfield, who would have thunk it”. For most, this ignorant utterance would have gone unnoticed, but for a true Salem fan this bothered me terribly. For the protection of the kids I will not go into detail, but I will say that Luke Owens is the ultimate team player and his parents have raised a fine young man. There was another post talking about “gamesmanship and rumors of Salem’s demise”. Gamesmanship? Either this poster is clueless or he is trying to hide the truth. I know the latter is spot on. Reality says there is trouble in paradise. Not on the field, but off it. Salem, will likely win a ton of games this year and based on what I am hearing will surely make another run at the State Championship. But at what cost?

Take a minute Salem fans and ask yourself are we really proud of what has happened in the past two years off the field? I will not air the specifics of my concerns; however, for some of the haters out there it’s not about recruiting. I was fortunate to play one year for Coach Willis White, I can say without a shadow of a doubt I have never met a more honorable man. He cared about the program, players and community and would not allowed this type of cloud to form. I am not saying Coach Mags does not, but I question whether he has lost focus of his real purpose. Yes winning is important, but by sacrificing integrity and morals the program is sending a terrible message to our youth. By several posters own admission there was uncertainty regarding several players return and worse posters have glorified the return of those who have not earned it. I think everyone deserves a second chance, but not when it affects players who follow the straight and narrow and are relegated to the bench by players whose sole existence is to bring glory to the Spartan program.

I would bet there are some who think I am a parent of a player and have a beef with the coaching staff. Wrong! I don’t have a son. I am just a fan who has the guts to speak up and hopefully encourage others to hold the coaches and administration accountable by maintaining the legacy of Salem Football. History tells us that greed, glory, and a lack of ethics will destroy a dynasty. Even the great and powerful Roman Empire crumbled under these circumstances. Most Virginia High School fans have seen it before. Just two years ago Ocean Lakes was on top of the world, but look at them now.

I will be in the stands quietly rooting for my beloved Spartans again this season with the hope that the ship is steadied. Not just for the current team, but for future athletes. Crucify me if you want, but I do not speak with a forked tongue. Go Salem!

The job and purpose of high school athletics is to help young people become responsible adult with good character. Sometimes you do that with tough love and dismiss a player. Other times you do it by giving players second chances. Get over it. Looks like the kids already have. And one more thing, who are you to determine when a kid has earned a second chance and when they haven't?

I believe you the watch wikki's post.

Things like this that you post is exactly what he is talking about. You don't know what has gone in the locker/weight room this summer between player and/or coaches. And as for another note, I don't know Ramsey personally but I give him mad credit for coming back. Most kids would have just walked away due to their own pride. Learning humility early in life is hard.

Another fan who second guesses the coaching staff and the administration. Once the decision is made by the coaching staff and administration best players play---period

I think most people in Salem want the kids to behave and be good citizens, including the coaches. I think they are wonderful influences on the boys. I am most concerned that anyone who was not sitting in the room and who does not know very specific details about anything involving each case in question can say these things. The school personnel would be sued if they spoke about what they saw, what they know, or what they did regarding a student. They have an obligation to maintain confidentiality, so it is quite unfair for someone on the outside, especially someone not involved, to assume they know anything about these situations. That is all speculation and just not right. Unless you are there, you cannot say what they did or did not do at all. You can't even ask them, and they sure as heck cannot defend themselves. They can't set any record straight. They cannot face accusers and say a word. The bottom line is that none of us knows diddly. None of us need to know diddly.

Was Robinson at the scrimmage?
No I didn't see #25. I've been told he's not playing this year which is a disappointment. (Idk for sure, but I didn't see him at practice 2 weeks ago or on Thursday) I guess we'll find out. For the scrimmage Richardson and Persinger (good Soph wearing #20 this year) were the backups behind Ramsey & Owen. Tae Hale is #7 this year and he's a backup FB. Some really good RB's, but it would be nice to have that change of speed also. Maybe he's injured idk, I just haven't seen him on the field. If he's not playing that adds to the list of several good players who have decided not to play or who are going elsewhere.

I think I counted 43 for the Brookville scrimmage for Varsity, 78 for the intrasquad scrimmage. (Varsity & JV) Gearing up for the benefit game with Magna Vista tomorrow night.
