Samford using illegal bats?

Gene just insinuated this in a tweet. Seems like it would be difficult to get away with, but I must admit the ball jumps off their bats better than any other college team I have seen this year.

The bats are individual tested and certified at some point in the post-season(and a team only allowed to use those bats). The problem is, I think this MAY only happen prior to Omaha, but I'm not positive.

The BBCOR bats last year had a metal "ring" in them that deadened them. You could remove the endcap, pull out the ring, and get alot better jump off the bat, and also alot better PING from the bat.

Nevermind the options you have with machining the barrels thinner for more trampoline effect, adding weight to the base of the handle, etc... There is ALOT of options in bat tampering.

That said, I'd be interested to know the exact policy on testing the bats before making any accusations...

I actually hope they do test them and are found to be in regulation. Those guys put the bay on the ball better than just about any team all season against Stratton.

There are plenty of completely justifiable reasons to bash Gene. This isn't one of them.

I don't get his tweets. Was basing that statement solely off of the post above which said nothing about joking. I'd be glad to hear if I'm off base and he was joking. Otherwise it's par for the course with him.

trouble earlier this year for bat-related issues. Thought I remembered something of that nature being discussed.

mentioned all many homeruns we had given up and then mentioned it was less than really because Mercer got in trouble using illegal bats. (Again I think that's what was said.)

Gene used to really like me. He asked me to write an article for him. He would call me on occasion. Once I dared to criticize LT then I was viewed as a bad guy. Finally he wrote me a really goofy PM crawling me for saying things about LT. I haven't been back since.

I'll second that.

I've probably seen 30 college teams this year and the balls just come off the Samford bats differently.

In person it's just different from the the impact sound to the initial velocity to the carrry.

The game Mercer jacked a few out of DNF was the closest I have seen but still not the same.

They use a Demarini (sp?) bat. I assume we still use Easton.

FSU better not get too confident.

This whole thread is a dream for a Samford fan. Imagine if our opponents' fans were posting these baseless accusations about us. What a compliment. This board would be having a field day.

I was listening to a call in talk show yesterday morning and juiced bats were a topic of conversation. All you have to do is take them to a machine shop and roll the bats to compact them or remove the ring on the inside of the bat.

Not all the brands perform equally... Doesn't necessarily mean they are illegal. Nike let teams out of their contracts recently because the bats were terrible.
