Solid reporting by the C-L

Scott Samsel is out as head football coach at Olive Branch.

Samsel compiled a 106-27 record 10 seasons at Olive Branch and guided the Conquistadors to the MHSAA Class 6A state championship in 2011. Memphis' Fox13 first reported the news.

"I decided to go a different direction with our football program," Olive Branch principal Allyson Killough told dcsaa.com.

Samsel, who finished 84-23 at the school in eight years, will teach history at the DeSoto County Alternative School.

Jeremy Toungett, who spent four seasons as a assistant at Olive Branch, was named the school's new head football today.

"When given a chance to come home, he jumped at the opportunity and has worked as an assistant football coach at OBHS for four years," Killough said. "He will continue Olive Branch High School's great tradition of football."

Were they that bad this year or are there some off field issues? I say that because I know they usually makes it deep in the playoffs and just won a title.

There was the issue of the QB Russ Trail who was allowed to transfer in, but the state powers that be declared him ineligible because his family had not established a bona fide residence. It was near that time that the principal at the time was quickly, and fairly quietly, reassigned to a position within the school administration.

Obviously, I have no idea if the removing of that principal and the firing are connected, but things were not exactly normal at OBHS this past fall.
