Saturday Hockey game moved?

My son is ready to make the trip to the game tomorrow but has read that it may get moved due to ice conditions.
I doubt that’s the case as it would leave several thousand in a lurch with no seats. He also heard a water pipe burst somewhere causing issues.
He’s coming in from Grand Rapids, MI and really doesn’t want to get to State College with buddies and be (ahem) left out in the cold.
Anyone have anything I can pass along to him?

It'll be frigid but I've seen nothing about any sort of precipitation or delays.

I heard about the pipe, ironically after Jones said during his radio show that the winterization of the big Beav was going to get a major test. I also heard on the radio this morning that the club game with Okie State was moved to Pegula after the first period. I didn’t hear the reason as I was almost to Altoona and couldn’t get clear signal to the conversation they were having with JoeBa.

I suspect everything is still a go since they can’t very well stuff 50-60k into Pegula. But clearly some things are not going to plan.

There was a pipe that burst Wednesday night and was fixed overnight. The club game being moved indoors is a bit concerning, I hadn’t heard that. The women’s varsity is scheduled to play today at 1:00, so hopefully that goes well.

The issue was how much colder it got in the evening affecting the ice hence the day game tomorrow

I know a lot of folks have been really psyched up for this, and the novelty aspects of it is appealing and eye-catching:

But there is a LONG list of reasons this may not be a good idea. We are seeing some of them up close and personal this week.
And a lot of them are the reasons that just about any other program that has tried these games in big football stadiums never did it again.

Wisconsin did it at Camp Randall.... ONCE (And maybe once at Lambeau a long time ago)
Michigan/MSU and some other local teams held a tourney in Comerica Park..... ONCE
UDenver did it in Coors Field.... ONCE
OSU did it in Cleveland.... ONCE
Michigan did it at the Big House.... ONCE
Notre Dame did it in their football stadium.... ONCE
MSU did one in their football stadium.... ONCE
Minnesota did one in their relatively new football; stadium.... ONCE
And there was a "mini-tourney" in Wrigley last year, I believe, which included PSU

Maybe missed one or two, but that's a nearly exhaustive list over the last 20 years or so.
Clearly, the vast majority of those who have tried it were not left with the impression that it makes a lot of sense, for whatever reasons - certainly not enough to make it a recurring thing.

I think about the only place to continue them on a regular basis is up in Boston - which is a very different dynamic: a handful of teams in the Boston area - so it is more of a tourney - with several games over a few days, which really changes the parameters. And they do it in a much smaller venue (Fenway)

I also think what we will see tomorrow is another of the dirty little secrets of hockey in giant football facilities is that there are very, very few good seats where you can actually see the puck get passed between players and shot into the goal. I dare say most people inside the stadium will be watching the action on the Jumbotrons.

No doubt.

Of all sports - where you match up a particular sport with a particular style of venue: There is no worse match than a large Football Stadium and a Hockey match.

Anyone who has ever attended a hockey game knows you need close to the ice with (relatively) steep vertical rise to maintain any level of game view (See Pegula Arena as Exhibit A).
This is, of course, a novelty event.

I agree. This one of those things that sound great in theory but doesn't work well. Kind of like football games in baseball stadiums or race tracks. Unless you like paying big bucks to watch from far away and weird angles.

Yeah, the site lines will suck seeing the rink is in the middle. And it will be really friggin' cold. However, I am still going so I can say I was there and get an IG photo. Its all about the GRAM!!! Any way, no idea how long these old bones will last in 13 degree weather. If only they sold Schnapps in the stadium. 😂

Just read on socials that womens game in 2nd period and there have been no more issues. I don't see PSU stopping this train because they would have the refund the 70K tickets sold and PSU hates giving back money.

I don’t claim to know about these things, but if they couldn’t reasonably expect more than 30-40k couldn’t they have put the rink across the field toward an end zone? Or do things like drains or the like make that impossible? Did Iowa have the mat at one end for their Kinnick wrestling?

I think the 200 foot rink wouldn’t fit between the concrete bowl in the south end zone. Plus it would be bad views from the suites. Poor babies. I think we will see close to 60k Saturday. Hope we see a win as well.

but yes, if they could’ve wedged it in and used temp seating on the north side of the rink, it still would be cool and most seats could see the puck. Downside is not using the whole stadium.

Not to mention, huge difference between watching outdoor game from a seat vs bleachers with no back support. Will be an uncomfortable few hrs for folks. Hope fans are rewarded with a W by the good guys tomorrow (and tonight).

I really would like to see this game but I'm not buying a monthly subscription to do it.

The game could be really interesting. The weather will play a role since ice can actually get 'too cold'. Hockey ice is best between 20-22 degrees...I think the low for HV tonight is around zero. The ice could be faster and less predictable, and it's way easier to lose an edge while turning on 'hard ice'. Neither team has played a game on this ice or with the boards on the temporary rink. And just like when it's really hot, very cold is hard on the players.

Should be a great game. Too cold for me though!

I’ll be watching tomorrow. My son’s first NHL game was the outdoor game in the Linc between the Pens and Flyers. First game for Gritty and the Flyers won in OT. But yeah outdoor games are overrated.
