<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Garrett Pitts and Daryl Norris played at Auburn HS tonight in the State
6A Semifinals. Here are some observations.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Norris pitched the opener for Fairhope, and took the loss 8-5. Fairhope
staked him to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and a half, but he couldn’t hold
it. Auburn hit him pretty good, but this is the defending 6A State Champs who
play in a fairly small park so it’s maybe not as bad as it sounds. Only six of
the runs were earned as his defense made three errors behind him. Norris has a
decent fastball and some good breaking balls. To me, he has a funky windup with
a little delay in the middle of it. I’m not a huge fan of that and I hope a
collegiate pitching coach can work on him to get rid of it. He also showed a
good move to first in picking off one of Auburn’s runners. For the first couple
of innings I was standing near a scout who was clocking pitches on him but I
couldn’t see the readout on the gun. He got pulled from the mound in the
seventh and went to the dugout, made a U-turn while picking up his first
baseman’s mitt and heading back out. He’s a burly kid. Listed a 6-1, 210. I
believe the 210, but not the 6-1. Norris also hit third for Fairhope but I don’t
think he did anything spectacular at the plate.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Garrett Pitts was fantastic. He was easily their best player in the
first game. Went 3-4 out of the leadoff spot with a single, double, homer, two
runs and three RBI. He played a very solid shortstop. Two of the three errors
in the game were made by the second baseman, I think on potential double plays,
so I didn’t get to see him turn one. He seems like a guy who just loves to
play. He basically ran to the batter’s box when it was his turn in the order.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">On a related note, Cohen needs to be calling Tanner Cimo, AHS’s second
baseman. His father is the head coach at AHS and Tanner was 6A All State as a
sophomore last year. Auburn U is on him but some of these local kids like to
get out of town.</p>
