<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Garrett Pitts and Daryl Norris played at Auburn HS tonight in the State
6A Semifinals. Here are some observations.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Norris pitched the opener for Fairhope, and took the loss 8-5. Fairhope
staked him to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and a half, but he couldn’t hold
it. Auburn hit him pretty good, but this is the defending 6A State Champs who
play in a fairly small park so it’s maybe not as bad as it sounds. Only six of
the runs were earned as his defense made three errors behind him. Norris has a
decent fastball and some good breaking balls. To me, he has a funky windup with
a little delay in the middle of it. I’m not a huge fan of that and I hope a
collegiate pitching coach can work on him to get rid of it. He also showed a
good move to first in picking off one of Auburn’s runners. For the first couple
of innings I was standing near a scout who was clocking pitches on him but I
couldn’t see the readout on the gun. He got pulled from the mound in the
seventh and went to the dugout, made a U-turn while picking up his first
baseman’s mitt and heading back out. He’s a burly kid. Listed a 6-1, 210. I
believe the 210, but not the 6-1. Norris also hit third for Fairhope but I don’t
think he did anything spectacular at the plate.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">Garrett Pitts was fantastic. He was easily their best player in the
first game. Went 3-4 out of the leadoff spot with a single, double, homer, two
runs and three RBI. He played a very solid shortstop. Two of the three errors
in the game were made by the second baseman, I think on potential double plays,
so I didn’t get to see him turn one. He seems like a guy who just loves to
play. He basically ran to the batter’s box when it was his turn in the order.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;">On a related note, Cohen needs to be calling Tanner Cimo, AHS’s second
baseman. His father is the head coach at AHS and Tanner was 6A All State as a
sophomore last year. Auburn U is on him but some of these local kids like to
get out of town.</p>

Cohen has has said he, Luwallen, and Bradford are really tough-minded kids who come to play everyday. We need more guys like that.

Burroughs said there is a possibility Pitts will catch for us.

I sure as hell wasn't going to watch AU tee off on our Friday starter.

Maybe tomorrow...

...but probably not.

and pretty much dead on from things that I have heard. I know I've said this before, but I'm not quite sold on Daryl Norris as the coaches are. I don't think he is a dual position guy, I think he is either a pitcher, or a third baseman. Now, I'm glad that we have him and I think he will be a good player for us, but I'm not quite sold on him being a weekend guy/middle of the order guy coming in right off the bat. As I think 8dog has pointed out, his ERA is a little elevated for a prospect of his stature, but some of that is because he had a rough outing against Pace HS- a school in Florida that is one of the tops in the country and also has MSU recruit CT Bradford on the team. He may be kind of like CC Watson last year- a guy that gets drafted, but ultimately is a guy that I think will probably end up at MSU. Cohen compared him to Pete Young one time, and I think that's actually a pretty good comparision because I could see Norris being a guy that starts at third, and then goes to the mound in relief as he develops as a player.

Pitts is the kind of guy that's going to help us turn this thing around. As you mentioned, he is a high energy guy, and he actually has a fair amount of power for a guy his size, and he can run as well. The one thing I worry about from him is can he make the transition to behind the plate? He may actually RS just to learn the nuances of catching. Regardless of how he does defensively, he is definately going to bring energy, he is going to go all out, he is going to hit, and he will probably steal a few bags here and there.

these are the types of players that we have to have to change our entire team attitude. Someone said something yesterday that I thought was a really good point- look at how many guys that MSU is bringing in that are football players- Norris, DeMarcus Henderson, Wes Rea and Jamie McMahon- those are guys that are used to getting yelled at and have succeeded in that environment. Then you have guys like the two you mentioned, Adam Frazier, Cody Abraham, and as we are discussing in this thread Garrett Pitts. One thing that I also like about this class- the number of guys that are MSU legacies such as Abraham and CT Bradford and the guys that have said things like- "It is my dream to play baseball at MSU". Believe me- those guys are going to bust their tails to win.
