Saw where Ole Miss got another in state football commitment in Clarion Ledger

Does MSU need to change the way we recruit in the state? It is obvious that Freeze is trying to get an early jump on players. I think that waiting until this summer to offer may be too late.

Just cann't get excited about all the pimping and groveling over HS kids.

Actually, I find recruiting to be quite disgusting. Cann't imagine how a coach feels about groveling and begging a HS senior to please take his scholarship offer. Just don't think I could stoop that low.

Here is what an Ole Miss fan on another message board had to say about this recruit (Sammie Epps).
I don't like it at all. He's one giant ***** and he's lazy. He went and played for my old high school (Pillow Academy AAA private school) and wasn't anything special. He's not even the best receiver on Greenwood's team. He left Pillow also because of grade issues.

Not a fan of giving this kid an offer at all.

Not so much concerned with this player as I am the fact that Freeze is a busy little beaver. That SOB it aggressively attacking in state players. I would not be shocked if he stomps our *** on in state recruiting this year just by getting an early start. Good luck getting a decent player to flip. We all know how successful we've been in the past flipping recruits or closing on one that's on the fence.

We have to take recruiting slow this year- we have very limited spots. As of right now- we only have about 12-13 spots for next February. Hopefully Spring practice and hot summer workouts bring some attrition to get us to the 20 mark or so

We've only got about 12 scholarships available for next year currently. What we've ended up with is a small senior class(this year) and an even smaller junior class. The only seniors for next year are the players from the 09 class that Mullen actually redshirted -- and over half that class played immediately, while almost no one in the '10 class did. This left us with basically a "half class" in recruiting that we're going to need alot of "good attrition" in the next few months to allow us to sign a full class(still going to be a small class) in February.

Alot of talent in MS in this cycle -- and much of it falls in traditional MSU strongholds -- so, while it will be a small class, it should be an elite class from an "average stars" perspective. Already DOUBLE the 4* talent in MS next year compared to this past year...

Just my thoughts. We can sit around with our hands in our pockets waiting and hoping that something happens from the NCAA that will set UM back another 6 years. Or we can work as 17'n asses off to recruit like Hell. We need to be proactive now. I hate to say it, but Freeze makes me nervous. I thought he was a clown at first. He's beating our *** at the most important aspect of football. You have to have talent to win championships.

We need to go ahead and plan on 20-25 spots and get on with recruiting to fill that many. We can always create spots if we need them. Sitting back and waiting to see if there is attrition is ******** and stupid.

I didnt say we were waiting around- I said we were taking it slow on taking commitments because of the low numbers. To assume we arent actively recruiting right now is stupid.

Then what does "taking it slow" mean? Of course we're actively recruiting, but we need to be 100% agressive recruiting all the time. 17 taking it slow. Like I said, the number will be 20-25. And if it's less, we're keeping dead weight that should have been attritioned out.

Probably means we aren't taking the project players that we usually may take in a regular year. "Taking it slow" is a terrible phrase to describe it, though.

Even still, the the past 5 years we've never had more than 2 guys committed to us at this point in the 'crootin' year. I think we really should chill on this. Quit letting Freesus freak you out.

Freeze offered this guy because his sister is a 9th grade RB who is already 6'2", 215 and runs a 4.4 forty. This guy isn't very good, but his sister Louvell will be highly recruited.

Feel free to run through the players and show the dead weight that needs to be gone...Nevermind that we will likely only have 83 total spots next year, which makes it more like 10 scholarships available at this point. Getting rid of 12-15 players is some pretty stout attrition -- even for the Alabamas of the world...

With 85 scholarships, there's always some dead weight. Anyone who is going to be a JR and isn't projected to get significant playing time should be a candidate for attrition if we need it to free up scholarships.

I was thinking the same thing. There's not many guys on the team right now that just stick out and need to be run off.

Taking this further.....and many of you will not want to hear this.....but MSU will never, NEVER, win at recruiting. At least not at the press conference. So we have to do this another way, most likely by developing guys, redshirting them, developing more depth on the lines, etc. Yes, we still have to land some good players, obviously. But we're not going to go head to head with Alabama and get it done, at least not for the foreseeable future. It's just not what MSU is. Fortunately, we live in an area that produces alot of mid-level recruits that can be developed with the right coaches.

Not an assumption. A fact. If Bama can find 5-6 players to cut every year, there's no way in hell we don't have more than that that can be cut if we need to.

5-6 guys that we feel 5-6 new recruits can reasonably replace? We are not exactly in Alabama's position. They get rid of guys because they can't make the 2 deep, IN ADDITION to knowing they'll have a 4 or 5 star prospect coming in to replace them.

In actuality, those guys Alabama cut, we should be welcoming them with open arms. Not the robbery guys, I'm talking about the two WRs from Mobile.

We had 29 scholarship jrs/seniors on our roster this year -- every single one of them was in the 2-deep. It's ridiculous to ***** in generalities without looking at the specifics...

Like I say, feel free to look through the classes and show us who should be gone. Here's the 2010 class -- which is at the point of fish or cut bait(rising rsJRs). Of the ones still on scholarship, show me 10-15 we can get rid of...

The funny thing is, nobody on either side should really care that you got this commit. I'd never even heard of him and it's pretty apparent that he has always want to go to UM anyway from his telling his coach 2 years ago that he was going to play there.

What about the sophmores? They're the ones who will be juniors in 2014, which is the season we're talking about here. Nobody's saying we need to cut any of the current juniors and seniors. It's too early now to know which ones might be candidates or not because the 2013 season hasn't played out yet. In fact, we haven't even started spring practice for the 2013 season yet. But there will be candidates for attrition.

I gave you both classes.... rising rsSO and rising rsJR... Feel free to show me how you'd handle the attrition -- assuming we need to lose at least 8 or so from those two classes(and alot of the dead weight listed is already gone)...

The proposition is alot more difficult than it seems when you actually try break it down. We've quietly had good attrition in our higher classes all along under this regime...and it's to the point now that you are looking at having to trim 2nd/3rd yr guys for freshmen in order to have a "full" class in 2014. It's just not going to happen to the extent that you said(20-25 guys). To even get to 20 guys, we will likely see some bad attrition...

Alabama does this because of the number of 3 year players involved with them. They are on a 3-4 yr plan, whereas we are almost unanimously on a 5-yr plan. Eventually when the roster is stocked, we are going to have to have smaller classes for this reason. Next year is VERY small because of extreme circumstances. After that, it'll level out at 20ish players/yr imo...

Maybe he's older, but I don't think he was in high school when we started. Mullen is doing an awesome job recruiting. He got the guys he wanted this year and has a bunch of kick *** players that were redshirted last year to play this year that are better than anything the bears got.

Quit looking to the bears as your measuring stick. They are the historically worst team in the conference, or close to it, with no tradition and no real ability to win. If you guys keep comparing our school to them, then we will start to fall to their level of failure.

I can think of a few that need to go. Nowhere to the extent that it would open up a ton of more scholarships. But I can identify at least 3. Not going to list names... but I can think of at one offensive lineman and one defensive lineman that have seen basically no playing time.

But I said this was going to happen a few months ago --- people would start complaining about recruiting because our signing class will be so small in 2014. The next 11 months are going to be miserable for the guys that base their happiness on recruiting.
