Scalping a Lawn

I've read about the benefits of scalping Bermuda lawns, but my lawn is a mix of Bermuda, St Augustine and with some Centipede mixed in. Should I still scalp it? I would like for the Bermuda to take over.

When I was growing up in S MS it was pretty common for folks to burn their lawns every Spring. I was always amazed the grass came back great every year. Theoretically it kept the annual weed seeds down but allowed the turf to come back. My next door neighbor had awesome St Augustine every year doing that, at least as awesome as St Aug can be.

i cut mine down as far as I can before it comes out of dormancy. I then overseed. Fertilize. Keep it low through first couple cuts and turn it loose. Always does pretty good.

I scalp mine down as low as I can with my rotary mower every spring. I’ll probably do mine here in the next few weeks once it greens up to about 75%. I’m hoping to switch to a reel mower when we move eventually. Can’t do it with the yard I currently have due to the slope of my yard

Used to cut a bunch of lawns, Bermuda was the worst outside of hay grass yards. Get it cut low now on bermuda and never let it go over a week without cutting. Figure out the height you want and don't try to change it lower till winter or it looks like crap.

I used to use a reel mower. You need a really nice, smooth hybrid Bermuda or zoysia lawn for it to really look right.
