I know a great many schools started back earlier this month. Which schools had the earliest starting date? I'm sure it had to be one in SWVA.?

SWVA schools don't start back until mid-to-late August. Never heard of a school system down here starting in July.

A great many already started back in July? I didn't think anyone started before August. I think Botetourt County starts about the second week of August, which would be one of the earliest around here. I'm not sure about when Botetourt starts, however. Salem students don't return until after Labor Day.

My brain was a month behind. What I was thinking was that many schools start early in the month of Aug.

I think Lord Botetourt starts on Aug 7 or 8. I'm sure there are a number that start that week. I wonder if there are any that start before Aug 7?

To my knowledge the Pittsylvania county schools (Tunstall, Gretna, Dan River, and Chatham) all start the 7th or 8th. Appomattox is that week as well. The Campbell County schools (AltaVista, Brookville, Rustburg and William Campbell), start the 15th.
In some states they have it setup so no schools start before Labor day. They say it increases tourism. I can see the plus and minus of either way.
The best news of all is the official start of football season is literally one day away.

Schools should start the Tuesday after Labor Day. Actually this is state law I believe, but school divisions get a wavier to start early.

I like the early start. Fall sports kids would be back almost a whole month before school starts if you start after Labor Day, there would be games starting before school started back. Plus this allows kids to finish a semester before Christmas break rather than finals a week or two after break.

That would be nice, but if most districts in SWVA started after Labor Day the school year would extend into July after making up all the snow days.

School starting in the beginning of August? That officially sucks for the students. Wow i wouldn't like that.

Up until a few years ago, The Commonwealth said schools could not start until after Labor Day. As previously mentioned, the state granted waivers for localities with a legitimate need.

I believe that law came about from the lobbyist for Kings Dominion, with followup support from Busch Gardens. The reasons were that starting the school year early damaged their labor pool. Maybe so.

But I believe that law was rescinded a few years ago.

What about the Nelson County start date? It seems like that I see those schools closed frequently during the winter weather period.

Buckingham County Publics Schools start August 3rd as well....

Wanna feel bad for someone? A few years ago when Buckingham decided to go from Late August start to early August....teachers got out something like June 15-16 and returned to work like July 25-26.
