Any scotch drinkers on board? I had to cut back my drinking quite a bit and have taken to having two or three glasses on one day of the week, so I'm making them count. I have thus far tried Glenkinchie and the Talisker Storm. I have some Talisker 10 year that I havent opened yet and am excited about. Anyone have recommendations that fall under $100/750 ml?

Talisker Dark Storm was the smokiest scotch I've ever had. It seemed like a science experiment designed to see just how much smoke they could embed in a drop. I would only buy it by the glass though. I wouldn't enjoy a whole bottle.

I will probably get another bottle of Talisker 10.

Macallan is a great not-to-peaty scotch. Something in the 12 year range is a good starting point.

Agree on MacAllan. I have been on bourbon for a while but might have to try the Mac again.

Highland Park

12 year can be found around here for right around $50. I think it’s the best value for a single malt. Just my opinion.

Harder to find around here but 15 year goes online for right at $100.

ETA - I saw someone suggest a “a Non Peaty” scotch. If you don’t like peaty, Highland Park isn’t the best pick.

Funny, I consider HP to be on the lower end of the peaty scale. The real peaty stuff comes form the Isles of Skye & Islay.

If you like non-peaty scotch, in order,

balvenie 14
balvenie 12
glenmorangie (any of the double aged, find the one you like; I like em all, probably sherry cask finish the most)
abelour
mac 12 (good scotch but I think overrated)
glenmorangie 10 (one of the best values out there. Can get it for $40 a fifth in Louisiana)
mac 10

if you like peaty, I haven’t tried a lot, but lagavulen (sp?) 16 is the best I’ve had.

It's a really old joke. Sorry I hurt any feelings... For the record I would never mix coke with bourbon.

I will try a new one.
I like my bourbon like InTheIttaBenaHotSun likes his woman, dry without another man's dick it.

Sorry about the original joke. I have heard it so many times for the last 20 years I never thought about it offending anyone.

But if I am sipping neat, it's scotch and I prefer Bunnahabhain 12 year. Smooth and just the tiniest hint of smoke. Best in my book for around $50.

Auchentoshan 12 year and Three Wood

If you like Glenkinchie then you should check out Auchentoshan if you haven't already. It's another Lowland distillery. The 12 year's sherried, but not quite a sherry bomb. Not totally unlike some of the Macallans. The Three Wood stuff is aged is bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. It's phenomenal. The 12-year goes for between $40 and $50 in southeast TN and northern GA, and the Three Wood is usually between $60 and $70.

Compass Box Peat Monster, Spice Tree, Glasgow Blend, and Artist's Blend

I haven't had a Compass Box whisky that I didn't like. I'm still a relative novice in the world of scotch, but Compass Box's blends have outclassed many single malts I've had at their respective price points.

Peat Monster - Smokey and fruity. A blended malt comprising Caol Ila, Laphroaig, and a splash of several Highland malts. Solid if you're into smokey stuff.

Spice Tree - I'm not sure I can describe this one other than that it's one of the best, most interesting whiskies I've ever tried. Another blended malt, though minimal smoke (if any) this time. I think they use a ton of different barrels in the blend and it shows man. Lots of spices as the name implies, but not like the heavy spice you get from some ryes. Really, really good. Again, $60 to $70.

King's St. Artist's Blend - Blend of Speyside and Highland malts with some grain whisky, with some french oak, sherry, and bourbon barrels in the mix. Light but far from bland. In the $36 - $42 range in my area, I'd recommend it to someone over something like Monkey Shoulder or some of the cheaper Speyside single malts as a worthwhile "entry" point that's good enough to keep your interest after you move on.

King's St. Glasgow Blend - Same concept as the Artist's Blend, but smokey from a health dose of Laphroaig. Only had it once -- it's for whatever reason not distributed in my area -- but I enjoyed it. Priced a little cheaper than Artist's Blend from what I've seen.

I’ve historically hated the stuff, but I’m beginning to suspect that it’s because I’ve had this constant belief that I needed to mix it with something. I just poured some me Dewar’s over ice with a splash of water, and I’m enjoying it while watching golf

NEVER mix good Single Malt Scotch with anything other than a few drops of water, MAYBE. Now for the blends, over ice is great, that's how I do Dewars too.

I like Glenfiddich with a little seltzer water. I've tried several of the blended scotches because they are cheaper but I haven't enjoyed any as much as a single malt. The single malts have gotten so expensive that I have a hard time switching from Jameson Irish whiskey. I can get it for about $37 for a fifth.

Scotch? No. Just No. I've tried to like it but just can't. I have a bubby that loves it and has given me dang near every brand out there to try. He's handed me glasses of Scotch that I wouldn't have admitted how much he paid for them. In the end, all but one tasted like someone took a bad whisky and made it worse. Johnnie Walker Blue was the only one I would drink again and it is no where near worth the price.

What do you think about Dewar's 15? Is it worth the premium in price? I see it for roughly $45 in my area.

It's fine, but you can get better scotch for $45. Glenmorangie 10 will be cheaper and better. If you like the blended scotches, I would do Johnnie Walker Black before Dewar's 15.
