because he only had 3 stars. At least that's what a couple of Rebels have posted over and over and over on this site the past 3 months.

Seriously, I've said since before the season started that Russell was head and shoulders above any QB who's come out of Mississippi in a long time. I sure hope we can hang on to him.

his performances that i've seen, he's the real deal. we better hope we can get an o-line to block for him so he doesn't turn into fant part 2.

*edited to add: and let the kevin fant sucked/was good thread hijack begin....sorry

and can keep Russell, we could possibly run some offense around here. As for next year, I hope Tobias Smith is as good as reported in the early practices last year. And Philip Freeman turning out to be decent would help a lot, too.

I do think he should redshirt next year if at all possible (I had been on the fence about that until then). He's got tons of potential, but he's still pretty raw. South Panola dropped at least 2 and possibly 3 pretty easy interceptions. Give him a year to work with a decent college QB coach and he should be a hell of a QB for the next 4 years.

But he has the potential and maybe will play as a freshmen....unless Relf gets a bit more accurate. If Relf can get his accuracy down then yea...we can definitely put him down on a redshirt.

I'm thinking we go through next season with Lee #1, Carroll #2, and not play anybody else unless they both get injured. Then we'd obviously have to play Russell.

we could have teebo and harvin in the backfield and it wouldn't help with the o line we have. games are won by the big uglys

I agree with this for next year based on my limited play seen of Relf. I would like to see Russell RSed, but I have seen him look much sharper than last night. Granted against lesser opposition than USP. He did have a nice game last night, not trying to take anything away from it, but I have seen much better out of him.

Back to the Glover conversation. That kid is a gamer. What is his story with college? And with the knee brace? I ask because I am just curious. i have seen him also play some pretty damn good games.

Relfs an athlete. He was the main quarterback that they were trying to get ready to take over the team. That dude has a straight cannon, but he's just not accurate. Reason he matters, is because it would make putting a red shirt on him that much easier to decide imo. I like Lee, he's a real cool dude and a good athlete, his height just hurts him the most. If he can continue to show that he'll be the best pick then yea give it to him. I just see the best transition for a qb if Tyler had to be redshirted would be Relf. Hell, I think he's good enough.

What has he done to really show you that he isn't atleast athletic enough to play the position? I'm not saying he is the answer that we need, but I'm not going to sit here and say he's the worst thing that we have. He's really athletic enough if he's coached up right.

i'm judging him based on what i've seen from him in the past. i feel that if he hasn't been able to beat out carroll or lee at this point, then he must not be that good. also, if he was as good or better than them, don't you think a desperate crooms would have used him a little more...knowing that the pressure was on to perform on offense??

But Croom almost took the redshirt off of him...like...4 or 5 games from the end of the regular season. That decision alone had me wondering a bit about his decision making myself, but with that... I keep hearing that the main problem that they had with him was that he was having trouble learning the west coast. I don't recall what he played in high school but I think it was the wing t. If it was really just an issue with learning the plays then I can kind of understand because the west coast is a pretty hard offense to learn as a quarterback.

"almost." regardless, the fact remains that he still did not have faith in him. also, carroll is the same age.

see if he can help him translate it to the field. He needs to do that way before he would ever beat out the anti-Relf, Tyson Lee. Lee doesn't have the size and arm, but performs well in game situations.

Also, I'll get called a blasphemer for this, but I went to the game last night, and Russell wasn't as impressive as I had hoped. I see potential because of his size, and with good coaching he should be a very good player, maybe the best ever at MSU. But judging from this game, I'm guessing a lot of his yards this year have been YAC yards after short passes, and he has benefitted from good playcalling and a pass-first offense, moreso than making things happen on his own. In the few times he threw downfield last night, two were out of bounds, one was an incredible effort by Smith, and SP dropped literally 4 easy picks.

I know, I know, he's the savior and I shouldn't be saying that, in case he or his father read the board. I hope I'm wrong, maybe he just had his first average game of the year, or maybe SP's defense is better than every other high school out there. That's just how I saw it.

I don't know if its 2007 again or if I am missing your point here. Are you saying Relf was being redshirted again this year? Maybe I am dreaming that he was RSed in 07, but either way if he was sitting at the bottom of the depth chart behind all the heralded qbs we have had on our roster then i don't see where he fits in. I am not gonna rule out the possibility that crooms and company would not know the next Brett Favre if he punched them in the mouth, but I am not too sure about Relf being him.

With Lee, Carroll and Relf, I don't see why the new coach couldn't keep the shirt on Russell next year. I will say this though, with a new staff coming in I don't see how they can do a worse job coaching the qbs than what we have had. Maybe they can do something with Relf before he follows Rutland.

should have said that they've been at state the siame amount of time, and carroll didn't run this in hs either. i guess my question is...what leads you to believe he's good; his spring scrimmage stats, the fact that even crooms didn't think he was good enough to play and/or that he couldn't beat out these two clowns???

*edited to add: it probably is a bit of a stretch to assume crooms could evaluate our talent correctly, though.

I haven't seen all of Russells games, but the few I have seen he made good decisions, had a strong arm, and was very accurate. He definitely benefited from YAC though. Last night he did not look as good as I have seen him either though.

I saw Russell 2 times live and he's really accurate and got an arm. Just puttin that out there.

I said Relf was red shirted last year and that I think that they should red shirt Russell.

I'm not saying that Relf is the answer, but I'm saying he's good enough athlete that he can atleast perform if he was coached up properly. I'm not saying he needs to be the undisputed starter, but I'm saying that he has enough talent to where he could start at a few programs. I just see alot of potential in his arm and his size. Main problem I saw with him was his accuracy to be honest.

What kind of year did the kid from Tupelo have? The one who's Dad is the big MSU alum? The one whose de-commitment from MSU and re-commitment to LSU put the entire future of Mississippi State University in jeopardy?

Screw Saban and his tan.

The next coach should bring him along slowly but not redshirt him. Make him the #1 backup to Lee, give him plenty of reps in practice, and give him one or two series per game and increase that as he improves and gets more comfortable. Then he'll really be ready to step up as a sophomore and have three years to start and play at a high level.

I just think he's one of those players who will never be even close to an adequate passer no matter how well coached he is. I think the absolute best case scenario for Relf would be that he could be almost as good as Kodi Burns, and Kodi Burns absolutely sucks ***.
