Scouting San Diego State

They were coached by Tony Gwynn before he had to take a leave because of cancer. Finished 42-19 and won the Mountain West tournament.

Their hitting seems to be better than their pitching. Hitting .291 but their ERA is 3.70.

They do have several hitters that appear impressive and their starting pitchers have pretty good numbers. Their closer has 20 saves, but the rest of their bullpen looks suspect.

Keep in mind that we are playing in a hitter's park, and our opponents are no slouch at the plate.

So do we go Fitts/Lingo or do we throw Mitchell?

At quick glance I didn't note any common oppornents. However UC Santa Barbara (who we played early in the season) and SDSU had several common opponents, for what it's worth.

Here are a few sample opponents and their respective records against each:

These West Coast teams are a shot in the dark when it comes to how good they are. You might have a team that is just above .500 play like the Yankees circa 1997 for a stretch, and then you might have a team with only a handful of loses that completely lays down in the post season.

One thing I know, there are some good baseball teams in our regional, and the players better put Ole Miss out of their minds if they hope to advance. MSU has it's work cut out for them in this regional.

Agreed. Tough to get ay real glimpse of what to expect - especially wth MSU's results with AZ and UCSB being from early in the season.

It's still a marathon - not a sprint. One game at a time, but its a winnable regional for MSU.
