These 2 guys are teammates and played the whole season:

Kevin Bolden: 53 catches, 1337 yards, and 17 TD's.....3 star
Brett Moncrief: 23 catches, 241 yards, 2 TD's.....4 star

When someone asked Scott Kennedy how is that possible, he responded by saying he handed out those ratings after watching ONE game.

You always have to take's Scouts Juco ratings with a major grain of salt.

Rivals didn't have Kevin Bolden rated for a long time. They had him as a 0 star, which I guess means he hadn't been evaluated. How the hell do you not evaluate one of the best JUCO WR's in the country until a few weeks ago? That doesn't make sense to me. These recruiting sites are sometimes crappy at evaluating talent in a timely manner.

I would put a decent amount of stock in the baseball and basketball ratings, because the summer leagues and AAUs allow the top athletes to get together and compete against each other nationally often, and the scouts get to see that. In football, first off there are so few games in comparison to the other sports. Secondly, it's tough to get a good gauge on players for comparison when they rarely face off. A lot of the rankings are compiled from combines where they get very little chance to actually do any contact work, which doesn't show a whole lot.

I'm assuming he was healthy the whole year?

Why would you want to recruit a 3rd option (at best) for your D-1 team? Why not just use a true freshman to get him the experience?

He's a soft verbal to Troy, with offers from Kansas and Missouri. It doesn't seem like the schools in this area were sold on him. I'm surprised with that little of production during the year that he would get as high a rating. If I were to have a choice, I would say I'm definitely glad we have Bolden instead of Moncrief.

If you're talking about Moncrief, from what I gather, his dad apparently has an existing relationship with Nutt, and our offer may actually be more of an offer to walk on than an actual scholarship offer.

We'll see how it actually plays out, but given the comments he's made, it doesn't sound like we're hot on his trail, and given our limited spots this year, I'd be surprised if we really wanted to spend one on a Juco WR.

Well, his dad is Sidney Moncreif, one of the famed Arkansas basketball "triplets." I'm a bit surprised Petrino hasn't made a push for him based on nothing more than goodwill to a famous (and maybe wealthy) alum.

The guys at Rivals and Scout who give those stars don't know any more about football than you or I do, and in fact I doubt they know as much as we do. If you want to evaluate a recruit, look at his solid offers. </p>

Scholarship offers are a good tool to look at. A guy like Taurice King grabs an offer this week from Bama, and in my mind, his stock goes up I think. I like to see who we are competing with, and I do think it shows the persons talent if some of the upper SEC schools are going after someone.

Look at the consistant top teams in the nation and tell me that they are loaded with 2 star recruits. Yes, there are diamonds in the rough and some 4 and 5 stars need coaching up to reach their potential but I promise you that my team of 5 stars will beat the **** our of your team of 2 stars 99 times out of a 100. If that's not true, why isn't MSU playing UNLV in the BCS Championship game?

edited for spelling.

he was fortunate that we gave him an offer, then he turns around and starts looking at USM. Coaches didn't like it, so they pulled their offer.

Thanks. And that's the biggest indicator to me, particularly this part from my post on Nafoom.

Take a good look at the rankings over the last 4-5 years. Pick out the teams that the rankings overrated (hint: they will be teams like Notre Dame and Michigan, traditional powers), and pick out the teams that the rankings underrated (hint: they will be teams like TCU, Boise State, Georgia Tech, or Cincinnati, non-traditional powers).

Yes, I quoted myself. I'm that important. The rankings are based primarily on the traditional powers because they know certain schools are going to win and validate the rankings. For MSU and Ole Miss, all the rankings tell us are how well we did in landing guys that the major programs were after, not whether those guys are actually going to be great or not.

Also, I'll add that the rankings favor certain coaches as well. Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Pete Carroll are respected, so if they come after a player, that player gets rated highly. Orgeron has a little bit of that reputation with the rankings too now, so when UT makes a move on someone, they'll get a minor boost. It's less to do with actual talent evaluation and more to do with relying on talent evaluation of other coaches, and even the best coaches miss.

JUCO ratings are very inconsistent and unreliable. I think that JUCO Dec grads are good for most teams but you will see a huge range in "Stars" vs "Performance". In my opinion, Stars are not that big of a deal for JUCO players.

Sounds like Bolden won't be out in DEC so Mullen decided that he didn't want him. Probably a good move because all JUCO's start off as "Dec" grads, then they are "May" grads then they don't enroll at all or until August.

I think that taking Moncrief (whether as a walk on or scholly) is a favor to Sidney IMO.

Will Cameron Newton be the real deal or will he be Brent Schaeffer Part II ?? Just a reminder to not get caught up if he commits or doesn't.

It took me about 2 years to figure out the rankings were bogus for football. Some people never figure it out.
