When the call is 4th and inches at the Green Bay 8 yard line... you are down 8... you play action pass. On the ensuing drive, your defense gives up a touchdown. <div>
</div><div>On the other hand, you get a gift and get an opportunity for ONE PLAY at the 1 yard line after your qb doesn't spike the ball at all on the last drive. ONE PLAY... you run the ball. </div><div>
</div><div>So when you needed to run the ball, you play action pass... when you need to play action pass, you run the ball. </div><div>
</div><div>On another note, the Saints D sucks and Green Bay's Offensive and Defensive line won the game for them. That goes to show you that it doesn't matter how much talent you have at skilled positions, it means nothing if you can't play well in the trenches. Green Bay played lights out, though. </div>

I thought it was a hell of an offensive game from both teams... Both of them are going to be solid (offensively) this season.

The Packers sold out on that last play to stop the run. Why? Because the Saints were in a similar situation earlier and decided to play action pass and it didn't work. Most people (coaches) will have the tendency (faced with those two decisions) to go with the safer bet the second time after the first time, it blew up in their face. I knew what play was coming both times... and I hated it for the Saints, because they had MANY opportunities to win that game. I was hoping deep down that Sean Peyton would surprise me and play action on that last play... because he had the perfect set-up to do that with the blown play action the first time. I guess hindsight is always 20-20, but I would have handled it differently. I guess that's why I'm not an NFL coach, though.

If there is one thing you can complain about in the Payton era is how terrible all of his teams are at converting the 4th and 1s or less running the ball. I honestly don't blame him for passing (or running to the outside) in those situations, because if you have watched enough Saints games over the past 5 years it's quite obvious that the Saints O-line is awful manning up and getting physical in those power run situations.

I don't understand your logic in saying that it made more sense to pass the ball on the final play and run the ball on the 3rd quarter possession. What makes those situations that much different? Edited to add: I now see what you are saying, but if he would have passed in that situation and failed people would be calling him an idiot for doing it again.

At the end of the day, the Saints played pretty awful (i.e. drives stalling and settling for FGs, not converting short yardage all night, not stopping GB on defense) and still could have won that game against the defending champs. If they can improve a little on both lines (which I really thought the Dline was going to be strong) then they will be fine.

even though he does make a lot of wtf calls, he's not afraid to take a risk. A lot of those same risks are why the Saints became so good in recent history and I kind of admire him for that.... but still... I can't lie... he still could have put them in better positions to win tonight lol

(Play Action on the goal line) and this is why:<div>
</div><div>The first 4th and short... inside the Green Bay 10 and its literally 4th and inches. Why would you even considering risking an incomplete pass in that situation? Why not give the ball to your power back running downhill and try to push the line those 6 inches? Well, instead you try to play action and it blows up in your face. No big deal. </div><div>
</div><div>Well, now you fail at scoring a touchdown, but you get a free untimed play at the 1 yard line. You have already been in a very similar down and distance situation already and tried to take a pretty big risk by running a play action pass. As an opposing coach, you better believe that is going through my head. I would be thinking "I would bet the house he is going to run the ball right at his strongest offensive lineman." Why? Because he already tried to get greedy once tonight and it backfired on him. So if I were Mike McCarty, I would have done exactly what he did and sell out my entire defense to stopping the run between the tackles... because in my mind, I KNOW that's what Peyton is going to do (since he tried to convert by passing the ball earlier and not only did it fail, it failed bad). </div><div>
</div><div>That's my reasoning for a play action pass on the last play. </div>

the tip of the iceberg. They did an amazing job at disrupting plays and Brees' rhythm. I hope our D-Line was watching that show they put on because that had to have been some of the best D-Line play (by the Packers) I've seen in a while. And that is coming from a Saints fan.

Should have gone ahead and run the play instead... Coach Peyton will make you scratch your head more than once a game..

In the 3rd on the pa 4th and 1... zach strief got punk'ed that isn't on the play call... it was a jailbreak on brees

in the last play so you would call a play action, when you start with the ball on the 1 and pull it all the way back, what about 8 yards not to mention turn your QBs back to a Dline that has caused problems all night in protection ...the problem with the call was who he handed it to ...if you are going heavy go heavy run a Oline in at fb and a fb at hb... punch it in

i agree with the last caller, we sucked at something and 1's except for when we had mike bell ...think it is more on oline than rb, though

going after Brees. The first one wasn't as questionable (although I wouldn't have never even considered going play action on a 4th and inches)... but the second call on the goal line, the defense knew exactly where the ball was going. Hershel Walker could have run that ball and he would have been stuffed because half the defense was in that gap finishing the play.

..the only defense in all of football I have seen worse than the Saints defense is the Memphis Tiger defense.

The Saints defense looked pathetic in pre-season games; the Saints defense looks even more pathetic in a real game.

The Saints will be lucky to win 8 games this season.

If any of you sincerely believe this Saints team is a playoff team, that I want some of that high end quality marijuana you are smoking.
