I think probably the more accurate measure of how Memphis splits out in its athletic loyalties and support is the license plate sales, which is pretty close to what I would expect, except that I didn't realize Memphis would be so far ahead of the rest.</p>

Memphis is essentially the only city where University of Memphis grads settle.

They have about the smallest radius of alums I've ever seen. If you were to map their alums and compare it to maps of other universities, I believe they would have the heaviest concentration to one point. To them, Desoto, Fayette, and Tipton County is expanding their horizons.

I'd be curious to know, but I really don't think Memphis has an alumni association outside of the city of Memphis.

And they're all enormous ********.

So, based on my limited sample size, the average Memphis resident is a UMemphis fan, and an *******.

You don't go to UM because you wanted to come to Memphis. You go to UM because you are already in Memphis and are not leaving for whatever reason. I haven't seen the breakdown, but I would bet the percentage of students over the age of 22 is much higher than the average as well.

Regardless how he arrived at his conclusion, based on my observations as a resident of 10+ years I say the break down of fans is accurate. However if it wasn't for basketball, Memphis would not have any fans. Withthat said, I never understood why SEC football fans in Memphis become Tiger basketball fans in the winter. I have never had even the slightest urge to go watch that garbage.

I think the numbers would have looked much different, at least in terms of plates. Memphis would still easily have the top spot, but I think that UT, MSU, and Ole Miss would all be bunched pretty closely in the 2-4 spots. I could hop on 302 right now and probably pass 25 MSU plates within a couple miles.

If you are basing your opinion on number of tags, there are half as many MSU tags as OM tags in Desoto County. So I'm not sure including OB & Southaven would make a huge difference.

OMBD is right. UM has about 1,000 tags in Desoto County. MSU has about 500.
