I keep hearing about how we only have 10 NCAA Tourney appearances in our history. I dont think many of our younger fans realize how hard it used to be to make the NCAA Tourney- especially in an SEC dominated by Kentucky for so many years.

Total NCAA Tourney appearances:

1. Kentucky- 50
2. UPig- 28
3. LSU- 20
4. Bammer- 19
5. Tenn- 18
6. Florida- 15 (10 of those since 1999 under Donovan)
7. Vandy- 11 (4 of those under Stallings)
8. State- 10
8. Georgia- 10
10. SC- 8
11. Auburn- 8
12. Miss- 6

As you look at our conference, we stand in decent shape as far as total Tourney appearances in history. The sheep bleating the "only 10 appearances" need to realize that had we beaten Kentucky, we would be tied for 7th in SEC history appearance-wise.

8. State- 10 - SIX OF THOSE UNDER STANSBURY.
You've been around long enough to know just how bad MSU basketball sucked before Stansbury took over, even if you won't admit it. Even Williams, who did a good job overall, onlywent to 3 NCAA tournaments in his last 8 years(and that's cherry-picking the stats to make Williams look as good as possible). You can't blame theshape he inherited the program in for the ****** teams he had in 92-94 and 97-98.

Williams - good (not great) basketball mind; huge ******* most of the time but could at times be nice
Stansbury - below average (not as terrible as he is sometimes made out to be) basketball mind; nice guy most of the time but a control freak

Combine them and we would be 32-4 right now heading to our tenth straight Sweet 16.

2/3 of the SEC barely had any NCAA appearances at all until the last 25 years.

Mark Gottfried is responsible for 26% of Bammer's appearances, and they are one of the best in the SEC
Kevin Stallings is responsible for 36% of Vandy's appearances
Donovan is responsible for 67% of Florida's appearances
Pearl- 28% of Tenn's appearances

All the modern coaches of the SEC are responsible for a large part of the appearances at most of the schools. We actually are witnessing the Golden Era of SEC basketball success

alot of truth in that statement...they were both at their best when they coached together- Richard couldnt recruit a great team with Stansbury, and Stansbury can't coach a team to greatness without Williams

the other 2 points to make is that 1)we did make the NCAA tournament one other year under Babe McCarthy but did not
go due to the state segregation law. The next year was the year we went anyway and made a huge statement. 2) the number
of visits is largely inflated in the last about 20 or so years when the tournament expanded. At one time there was only 16
teams, then 32, then 64 so with thepUKe dominance nobody other than pUKe went.

Oops, one last point...can we really count all of Upig's attendances? most of them did not happen in the SEC and weren't
they sort of the basketball king of the SWC for a stretch?

The tourney expanded to 64/65 for the first time in 1985, 25 years ago.

From 1939-1950, only 8 teams played in it. It was 16 teams in 51-52. It was then about 22-25 teams for the next 20 years or so. Then it was 32 teams for a few years, and spent the next 5 years or so between 48 and 52 or so teams.

It's a little bit like comparing bowl appearances for a coach today versus a coach 50 years ago. 50 years ago there were only a handful of bowls and you had to just about be Top 20 to make a bowl game. These days, you just have to finish .500 overall, and you can be 9th or 10th in the SEC and get a bowl bid.

These stats say that........

Arkansas is the 2nd best program in the conference and LSU is third. Which is debatable. However, if you told any SEC fan that today. They would probably laugh. Why? Because both programs have had a tough few years. What has changed in those few years? Coaching.

LSU's program reached their pennacle (so far) with Brown as HC. Arkansas.......Nolan Richardson. Both those programs lost those coaches, although LSU bounced back with Brady, and look at where they are at now. Florida's current situation is more comparable to ours. The program was mediocre to bad and had not accomplished much. Lon Kruger earned a Final Four. Then in steps Donovan and they win NCs.

All that to say, yeah Stans is no strict disciplinarian. Yeah, his teams seem to struggle offensively. However, the dude has taken the State program up a few levels. Who knows what would happen if he was to leave........an Arkansas situation? Or do we find a Brady? Or do we find a Donovan? Knowing State as well as I do, a bird in hand is worth more than two in a bush.

Williams was our Lon Kruger. Stansbury is our Donovan.

thats the point I was making. Meo and some of the other Sheep try to use the "we only have 10 Tourney appearances in our history" card like it's some ridiculously low number when compared to other schools. I was showing that to be false.

It would do wonders for you and you could even buy the generic brand Fluoxetine. Why not try it and give us a break for at least a week. I know it will be difficult but why not give us and the rest of the world a break.
