New Orleans will be the site of the new marquee bowl game between the Southeastern Conference and Big 12.The conferences made the announcement Tuesday. The game will still be called the Sugar Bowl and will be played in the Superdome. The agreement between the leagues and the bowl is for 12 years.
The SEC has a long history with the Sugar Bowl. Seventy-one times an SEC team has played in the game, far more than any other league. The very first Sugar Bowl in 1935 matched Tulane, then of the SEC, against Temple.
"New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl are synonymous with post-season college football. For many years, fans have enjoyed the color and pageantry that New Orleans offers," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "We look forward to competing against the Big 12 as a new championship tradition begins on New Year's Day."
The story was first reported by ESPN.com
Several sites were vying to host the game, including Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Atlanta, Houston and San Antonio also submitted bids to host the game, but it came down to Arlington and New Orleans.
"From the moment this game was announced, there has been tremendous excitement associated with the collaboration between these two conferences. That excitement is reflected in the bids received to host this game. There were great cities, attractive destinations, and impressive venues to consider," Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said. "Now Big 12 fans can look forward to a New Year's tradition and coming to New Orleans to support their team. We are thrilled about our long-term association with our SEC colleagues and to be in partnership with the Allstate Sugar Bowl."
The new college football playoff begins after the 2014 season and the first Sugar Bowl in the new format will be played Jan. 1, 2015. It will match the champions from the SEC and Big 12, unless those teams are selected to the national semifinals. In that case, two other highly rated teams from those conferences will be paired up.
"We're pleased to have been selected to host this great game," Sugar Bowl Chief Executive Officer Paul Hoolahan said. "This gives us the chance to extend the Sugar Bowl's long-standing relationship with the Southeastern Conference and to develop a new relationship with the Big 12 Conference."
The game will be part of the semifinal rotation for the new playoff system, along with the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl. At least three more sites need to be picked, with the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz., and Arlington and Atlanta the leading candidates.
How often each site will host a semifinal has yet to be determined

For discussion sake

Does the new college football playoff increase the odds that MSU will play in the Sugar Bowl? I say yes.

I want to go to the Sugar Bowl real bad.

It was always going to be one of the bowls we already had. The only choices were was it going to be the Sugar Bowl or the Cotton Bowl. This was all about two things. Solidifying the SEC and the Big 12 as the top 2 conferences. And changing the traditional bowl structure. Instead of the bowls selecting teams to play in their bowl, now the SEC and Big 12 selected the bowl their teams would play in.

Of course

The PAC-12 and the Big 10 will lock down the Rose Bowl I'm sure. Orange will be ACC and I guess Big East?

No, the Big East is out in the new format. Only way they get into the limelight is to be ranked in the top 4...just like the MWC, MAC, CUSA, and Sun Belt. There is talk of creating a top tier bowl for the small guys, but the lack of tv interest is making it very unlikely.

Pac12 and B1G have already locked down the Rose Bowl for the same length of time and same $$ that we are getting for the Champions aka Sugar Bowl. Both are worth $80mil/yr.

The Orange Bowl has locked up the tie-in between the ACC and the highest ranked available team between Notre Dame, B1G, and the SEC. This game will be worth about $55 mil/yr. Yes, the Big12 and Pac12 are pissed about this, as it basically guarantees they will make less bowl revenue than the SEC almost every year(and potentially the B1G on occasion).

The conferences keep 100% of the proceeds in the years that these bowls don't fall within the playoff structure, which will be rotating among 6 sites. The playoff $$ will be divided amongst everybody in FBS much like the current BCS money is, so it is advantageous to us financially to prevent the Champions/Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl from falling within the rotating playoff structure as often as possible.

Basically, what we have in the "new BCS" is this:
Rose Bowl(Pac12 vs B1G)
Sugar Bowl(SEC vs Big12)
Orange Bowl(ACC vs ND/B1G/SEC)
Dallas Bowl(assume the Cotton Bowl)
Glendale Bowl(assume the Fiesta Bowl)
Atlanta Bowl(assume the Peach Bowl)

2 of the 6 will be playoff bowls every year, on a rotating basis. Thus they won't have tie-ins on that given year. Will be interesting to see if tie-ins are locked up in the other bowls, in which the SEC and Big12 have 2 pre-existing tie-ins in those bowls, while the ACC has 1, and 1 at-large. Still not quite sure how the final 3 will look in years that they aren't hosting the playoffs. I'm sure this will be a holding point for the Pac12, because they get shut out of many of these games if traditional tie-ins are held. If things stay mostly identical to what they currently are, on a given year that the playoffs work out to be in Pasadena and Glendale, that would leave the SEC with the possibility of 1-2 in playoffs, 1 in Sugar, 1 in Cotton, 1 in Orange, 1 in Peach... for a total of 5 or 6 "bcs" teams. While that is probably fair, the rest of the conferences will never likely go for it...

Yes. Now we can conceivably be the 3rd best team in the conference and earn this spot. Even better, being 4th gets you a shot at the Orange.
