SEC Championship Trophy backgrounds

..if you win the NC in football, you get a piece of football-shaped crystal.
If you win the SECT in baseball, you get a pyramid-shaped piece of black granite.
Can anybody provide the answer to why & when pieces of beatnik art took the place of legitimate trophies?
For all the youngsters who have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a real trophy...

The Egg Bowl trophy = real trophy. Even if it is shaped like a football, it is still a real trophy.
The Stanley Cup = real trophy...

I am asking within the context of 21st century American trophies; ancient Greek laurels and Hirogen skulls do not count.

If anything Rivals made up the "********", which wait a minute, was exactly what turned out to be true. But because the official bracket was to be released in 30 minutes and you were on your period, you had to spout off. I get it.
