SEC Unit Rankings

I always like looking at the position unit rankings going into the season. I came across this on SEC Rant (Phil Steele, supposedly). Everyone seems do expect us to finish at the bottom, but his position rankings for us look decent. Maybe it's the OL play and the SoS that makes people predict us to finish so low, but thought this was interesting. Was particularly surprised at the QB ranking.

I'm guessing this is more about projecting production from Leach's system. I don't think we have the #2 QB or #13 RBs in the SEC this year.

If we have the #13 OL, it will be a long year.

I would say our RBs and DBs are better than that. I hope our OL is much better than that. I would be very pleased if Will was the second best QB but idk....I might guess 4.

Our running backs, OL, and DL are significantly better than that. I would say our special teams are much better than that, too.

On the flip side, our QB rating is too high.

They do realize our DBs were player with a 42 player roster last year, correct?

Yes...I forgot to mention DL. Definitely better as are the LB. Those guys are studs too. I hope im not overly optimistic but I think people are gonna be surprised. WSU had an 11 point jump year one to year two. And I know that D is gonna be better

Definitely projecting production. Steele obviously thinks Will will throw for a lot of yards in spite of getting sacked 8 to 10 times a game and the receivers will rack up yards accordingly. Our running backs will only carry the ball 5 times a game, therefore no significant rushing yards. Then he projects our defense to be middling when it comes to the yards we give up and out DBs will get torched for a lot of big plays.

Fair projections, but he'd be WRONG! We're gonna be awesome.

We don’t have the 2nd best QB nor does OM have the 1st. We do not have the 13th worse OL and RB - I don’t think, but as someone stated, if we do, its going to be a long year.

RB's are way better than that. There have been years where he had a guy get 900 ru and 500 rec. One year he had 3 guys with 500 ru ea and another 1000 rec between them.

You won't find many RB groups giving you 2500 total yards do you?

Will that happen this year? I don't know, I just know Leach's best teams find away to feature RB's and they attack those dropping 8 defenses very effectively with the RB's. If that's what they do this year, expect some production from several RB's because I think the talent is there.

And on pretty much the same note, if our OL truly plays like the #13 unit, how in the world are our QB and WRs supposed to perform like the 2nd or 3rd best in the SEC. I just don’t see how you can have one without the other as we saw how poor OL play absolutely killed us last year

ST - I think we have the best or at least one of the best FG kicker's in Ruiz and our KO's mostly end up at spotted at the 25. Our punting last year was below average for net, avg punt etc and middle of the pack in punt coverage.

Kick Ret - Lidedrick Griffin KR average was tops in the league but our Punt Ret was subpar.

There were several teams that didn't have any punt ret yards for the year. Auburn actually had -8 Punt Ret yards for the year against them per the SEC stats line. https://www.footballdb.com/college-football/stats/stats.html?yr=2020&conf=9&mode=U&sort=puntryd

So, 8th may not be that far off. That's about right for me on special Teams as a whole.

Agree with all of this. I also think our receivers are too high, although they should be pretty good.
