SEC vs. Big 12 Bowl game

If you have followed twitter this morning, you have seen that the SEC & Big 12 have come to an agreement for their champions to play if both are left out of the National Championship playoffs. <div>
</div><div>No first of all, this game will not happen. However, I think the SEC & Big 12 knew that, but did it anyway to set an example for the Big 10 and Pac to follow. Kinda like saying, hey look, its not hard to do the right thing.</div>

After reading more, it seems to me that it will just be a better version of the Cotton Bowl since non-champions can play in it if the champions are in the playoff. The only difference between this and the Cotton Bowl is that it could be played as the Sugar Bowl, and could take the SEC team the usually goes to the Capital One Bowl. The biggest loser in all this is the city of Orlando. The Capital One Bowl just lost a lot of clout. <div>
</div><div>The good news for us is that it adds a higher level bowl to the SEC. That means that if we have a good season there less of a chance we end up in a **** bowl like the Liberty. Also means that making the Chik Fil A Bowl just got easier, and I know everyone loves going to the dome for a bowl game.</div>

This is a direct attempt to split the national title if/when one of our conference teams is wrongfully left out of the playoff under the proposed Delaney model.

IF the new 4-team model includes an "Alabama clause" to potentially keep a second highly-ranked SEC team out of the playoff, this move makes even more sense. It's the ultimate trump card. A #2 Bama team vs a (likely) highly ranked team from the Big12, in a game that Bama rolls, and in the event of a#1 LSU playoff loss, could EASILY split the national title.

He's leveraging his version of playoffs...either now, or at the first major failure to crown the best team as champion.

It also flips the bird to Swoffort and the ACC. Dead league walking. Shouldn't have sided with Delaney on this. This setup all but assures their demise, by leaving them out of all the premiere post-season games, unless they are good enough to make the 4-team playoff, which they RARELY are. You've got the Rose(Pac/B1G), newSugar(Big12/SEC), and playoff. That leaves scraps for the ACC to match up with the Big East, in games between teams ranked in the low teens that no one cares about watching...

Very good point Sir, and good beak down. Sounds like a good move for the SEC, and again, should help us go to more legitimate bowls more often.

If there is a playoff, there will not be a split national title. That's like having a split NCAA Basketball National Title. It doesn't happen because there is a playoff.

What we'll have when this system kicks off is the world's first NCAA-sanctioned football national champion.

How do you even compare a 68 team basketball tournament to a 4 team football tourney? Does not compute. It's illogical to even try to reason through those major differences.

Under the proposed delaney system, which is supported by the pac and acc, it is very possible that the #2 overall team in the country(Alabama from this past season) from the SEC gets left out. In this scenario, #2 will likely play #6-7 from the Big 12 in this new game. Let's say they win in dominant fashion. Then, what happens when #1 LSU loses in the champ game to a 2-loss #5 oregon(who they had also already beaten early in the season). You can bet your last dollar that the AP votes Bama #1 here, and the final bcs formula has them #1 too. That, my friend, is a split national title.

The only way this is overcome is to lose the "conference champions" caveat and just take the best 4 teams. #5 can NOT climb to #1, but #2 can. Slive is leveraging the fact that #2 should not EVER be left out, regardless of conference affiliation!

Only one team will be able to win a "NCAA Football Championship" and that will be the one that comes out of the playoff.

But what happens if the#2 team and#3 teams do not win their conference? Let'ssay they areOK Stateand Alabama.Then you what you have have isthe #1,#4, #5and #6teams making the final four. Then what if the number#1 loses to the#6 team and the number#4 losesto the #5.Then you end up with #5playing #6 for the National ChampionshipbutAlabama and OK State who were the#2 and#3 teams play in the sugar bow and Alabama wins. It is very possible that the AP could name Alabama champion and we haveseperate champion.

This is all hypothetical but a scenario like could happen. You can thank the pansie Big 10 for this and making the Alabama rule.

According to guy with the Sporting News, this bowl will exist outside of the current bowl structure & be owned and "sold" by the SEC/Big 12.

Some early estimates I've seen mentioned range between $20 to 50 million for this game which would add an extra $1-2 mil per team after bowl revenue sharing. Obviously these are mostly just people speculating on the internet, but this more or less cuts out the middle man and let's the conference take a bigger cut of the bowl profits.

Delaney, Swoffort, and Scott got together and shot that idea down.

They initially wanted only conference champions to be eligible for the playoffs, then said "conference champions in the top 6" plus at larges to get to 4. The wording they used though does NOT allow a team that didn't win their division to get in, hence the term "Alabama clause". Basically, this setup would prevent the SEC from almost ever getting a second team in...regardless of how much they deserved to be there.
