I agree with part of your statements. First, this wasn't on Doege. Lots of other things yes, but this one play was not his fault at all. Second, the play design was wrong. WVU comes out with Split, Slot, Wing, Split look. Bryce Ford Wheaton, the split on the field side, was lined up to wide (out to the numbers). He needed to be more inside the numbers. Maryland showed man coverage. Sam James. the slot receiver, ran a good route to the back pylon. This play should have been an easy TD. Doege read the coverage correctly, pre-determined which receiver would be open (like he's supposed to) and made a good throw. BFW was supposed to run a slant-in or a post-route (basically the same based on location). Instead, for whatever reason, he never ran the route or got off the line of scrimmage. Maybe he slipped, maybe he gave up on the route, maybe he took the play off. But for whatever reason, his mistake allowed the Maryland corner to find the ball and beat James to it. It cost WVU six points and maybe the game. Everything turned right then. The bad coaching aspect I would have to agree with. Not the design altogether, but rather the timing. WVU hits a big time pass to James to set itself up for the go ahead score. Leddie Brown, who was majorly underutilized in the second half, should have at least toted the rock on first down - 10 in the box or not. If not a run, a flare out of motion to the field side since Maryland was locked in man coverage should have given Leddie plenty of room to maneuver with only a linebacker to beat. Those two plays should have been first and second down plays. Make that throw on third down and its easier to live with the results either way.
