Beginning today, Thur Sept 19th a new protocol will be in effect for Pittsylvania County Schools athletic events.. No back packs, book bags, fanny packs or purses will be allowed unless they are clear plastic or I guess a mesh type. This is in response to the gun incident at the Dan River-George Washington scrimmage game. After a confrontation between some kids at that scrimmage, a gun was found in a persons fanny or waist pack. This is all athletic events, not only football. This will be Tunstall, Dan River, Chatham and Gretna. There is an article on WSET TV in Lynchburg this morning about it. I guess you can contact the individual schools for the particulars or if you have questions.

Here in Charlotte, the Show Pros company is mandatory for football and basketball games. They wand you and females have to open their purses so they can take a look inside.

Halifax wands for football and some basketball games.

The only time I’ve ever been to Halifax County HS, or South Boston, for that matter, was when Salem went down there to play the first game in the Comets’ “new” gym. That was in my senior year, December 1979. I don’t think we got wanded that night, but that was a long time ago!

BTW - Salem lost an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, and Halifax won in OT. If memory serves.

Back then, wanding was unnecessary. Guys fought with their fists, then shook hands once it was over. Nobody thought about shooting someone to settle a beef. I had several fights when I was growing up. Never once thought about killing someone.

“Never once thought about killing someone.”

That’s good to know!

I’ve been in two legit fist fights in my life. One as a high school sophomore, and the other when I was in my late 20s. It’s a really, really stupid way to settle differences, but infinitely superior to gunplay.
