but I hate losing to State more. Does that make sense? I also hate Bama and UT far more than State. I pull for MSU to beat Bama and UT and LSU. For me it's not about rivalries, it's about the douchebaggery of the fans, and UT, LSU and Bama are hard to beat. From 1990 to 2010, the record is 9-12 of OM/LSU. Winning 43% of the games is pretty competitive when they typically have a much better team. That's usually the result of a rivalry game. Talent and records don't always matter.
I wanted to set fire to Auburn's campus and have a public execution of Gene Chizik. Do I feel that way about Ole Miss? No. As someone pointed out, does that make them a rival? Not as much as Ole Miss. 9-12 against LSU in the past 21 seasons doesn't mean anything, because I'm pretty sure we're 1-20 (exaggerating but I'm sure I'm not too far off) in those seasons against Alabama and I'd venture to say that Alabama is easily our #2, solely based on the fact that they're just down the road. The "stepchild/little brother" comparison really does work in that case, however.

The LSU game is usually a much better atmosphere and exciting game. Now that may have as much to do with weak crowds due to thanksgiving as anything.

You can't deny how intense an egg bowl for the West would be though.

I'm not related to, work with or hang out many Tiger fans. Different story with State. I don't want you guys to excel in anything.

go back to 90 and say "Hey, LSU is only 12-8 versus us" OR say "well, since 2000, we are 2-9 versus them"

Which sounds like it helps your argument more? I would definitely say that you are the only one (in the SEC or certainly LSU people) that thinks that ANYTHING good was done during DiNardo's tenure. To all other people, LSU became a topic of SEC football when Nick Saban came to town. Hell, I couldn't even tell you who the LSU coach was before DiNardo...

Awful series of posts Sterling. It's almost like you're going out of your way to be a douche.

why anyone falls for this obvious attempt of OM trying to get under the State fans skin? It's the same as Mullen only calling them TSUN. Every single one of them when they fall asleep at night knows who their main rival is so why do you need for them to say MSU? If you let it bother you than it fuels them to continue saying LSU.

No, seriously, now that I got DS's board on the watch list, I typically pull for LSU, and my reason why is because for LSU, beating MSU doesn't mean all that much to their fans, but for MSU, beating LSU would be a really big deal.

So, in essence, I'm pulling for the least amount of joy that could possibly come out of the game. If all things were equal on that front, I'd probably still pull for LSU by just a little bit, or at least I would pull against MSU a little bit more. I can't pull FOR either.

Ultimately, rivalries are personal, and they can be different from fan to fan. I'd say that if you were able to poll people's actual emotions and cut out the trolling some of our fans do to get under the skin of MSU's fans by claiming LSU as our big rivalry, you'd find that MSU is the biggest with LSU a clear second and then maybe someone like Alabama third.

It really all depends on where you live and who you interact with, but it can also be generational. For our fans in south Mississippi and Louisiana, and also for many of our retirement age fans, LSU is the team they hate most, moreso than MSU. If you live in north Mississippi or Memphis, it's most likely MSU first, then LSU, and you may hate UT almost as much.

Tennessee is an interesting test case for the generational argument. Their older fans hate Alabama most. Their 30 and 40 year olds hate Florida the most, and many of the 20s crowd hates Georgia almost as much as the other two.

All that said, if I were to rank my hatred for SEC teams, this is my list:
1. MSU
2. LSU
3. Arkansas
4. Alabama
5. Vanderbilt
6. Auburn
7. Tennessee
8. Florida
9. Kentucky
10. South Carolina
11. Georgia

That's just me personally.

Rivalries were two-sided. I live, work and am around LSU fans on a daily basis. Not once have I ever heard an LSU fan say that they were rivals or really hated Ole Miss. So, some of these Nafoomers might want to clue LSU in on this. I personally would give up the Egg every year for beating Bama, LSU, Arky in a heartbeat. This whole "LSU is our real rival" crap seems more like envy than anything else. I could care less if they consider us their rival our not. Like it or not though, they are our rival and we are their's. Denying it is comical. I agree with another poster though, the past two years I have grown to hate Auburn just as much if not more than Ole Miss. The thing is, they hate us too, always have. A few more years of the crap that Auburn has been dishing out and it could make for another big rivalry for us. Hell, our "rivalry" with Auburn (if you want to call it that, I don't) is already more heated than Ole Miss' "rivalry" with LSU!

and the trophy. Honestly, both State and LSU are our rivals. You can have more than one.

Ole Miss Rebels

See also: Magnolia Bowl

LSU's traditional SEC rival is Ole Miss. Throughout the fifties and
sixties, games between the two schools featured highly ranked squads on
both sides and seemingly every contest had conference, and at times
national, title implications. A trophy has now been named for the
LSU-Ole Miss rivalry known as the "Magnolia Bowl".
Recently, the second to last regular season game has been between these
two colleges. There is still a strong rivalry between both schools.

From 1961 through 1988, LSU did not play on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford, Mississippi. Instead, all of the Rebels' home dates in the series were contested at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. LSU and Ole Miss played at Oxford in 1989 for the first time in 29 seasons, then moved the series permanently to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in 1994 after the 1991 and 1992 contests returned to Jackson.
