Assuming you're serious, this was done a number of years ago, to help reduce the travel for teams and obviously allow more fans to see their teams in person. It doesn't always work out that way, but it's a big improvement vs the old way.
Rather than think of the 4 corners of the brackets as directions, think of them as A, B, C & D.
The geography is relatively irrelevant, at least for the first 2 rounds.
