I'm a high school junior that is currently looking at universities in the South, sell me on coming to MSU in 2011.

(keep in mind that I'm out of state and a fan of the football team :) )

i'm not quite sure what i want to do, lol. meteorology interests me but i don't want my only options to be to have to work at a tv station.

in terms of admissions, i have a 2.9 weighted GPA at a good private HS here but I've yet to take the ACT. My supposed range is from 26-30. Will I have any problems getting into MSU?

you can go to MSU and practically be anything you want to be, so with that out of the equation, go for the women.

if you do that and make what you are supposed to on the ACT you will get your out of state waived. You have sports year round, and as already mentioned, the cotton district. There is a lot of different stuff to do here.

Dear LAMSUFAN,

Thank you for your interest in our fine institution! Your avatar indicates that MSU may be the perfect match for you! MSU offers a great meteorology program, but you can use that degree to go to law school, medical school, or meteorological research in addition to the typical television jobs. A top private school kid like you will probably succeed in whatever field you choose. A 2.9 GPA is acceptable, but make sure that you have at least a 3.5 in football knowledge. Make sure that you know EVERY game of the Dan Mullen era backwards and forwards as details often come up in interview questions. Also, a 26-30 is great, assuming that you make at least a 24 on the English section. We look forward to having you.

Please contact either of our student representatives with your additional questions: [email protected] or [email protected]

Once again, thank you for your interest!

Sincerely,

Dr. Henry Kissinger

Good choice! I am a senior in meteorology. If you go on TV (broadcast meteorology) its not as math based but you take the same meteorology classes basically. You would have to take Chemistry, Physics 1, Calculus 1 and 2, Practicum 1-3 or 4, News Writing, Water Resources..I had take Cal 1-3 and Differential Equations, Physics 1 and 2, Chemistry, Geowriting (very tough class my paper was 26pages long) and a no practicum for me. But we have awesome teachers its tough but a lot of fun. You'll really enjoy Dr. Wax, Grady Dixon, Jamie Dyer, Mike Brown, and Doug Gillham (one of the best forecasters in the country hands down) and Renny Vandeweege (he is a very cool guy and teaches practicum). I'd recommend you to be good at math and physics or get used to it..If you get through that, you'll love the major..Very cool..I'm an operational meteorology major so I'm gonna try to work at the National Weather Service, not on TV. If you need any more info I can get you some..There are a few other meteorology guys on this website that can tell ya about it..Your weather classes you'll take are Intro to Meteorology, Applied Climatology, Physical Geography, Weather Analysis I and II, Synoptic Meteorology, Physical Meteorology, Thermodynamics I and II (Senior Year), Weather Forecasting I and II, Satellite and Radar Meteorology, and Mesoscale Meteorology...You also have to take a Statistics class now that they got rid of Statistical Climatology..

10. We have great cheese
9. There is so much to do in Starkville, you will have to go to grad school to do it all
8. Taking Coach Stansbury's English Grammar class will benefit you when looking for a job
7. Very modern campus, we did away with old traditions long ago- its like being in Seattle
6. Easy to find parking anywhere on campus
5. The new Yankee Stadium was copied from our baseball stadium
4. Sylvester Crooms teaches a great class on coaching football, then 2nd semester he teaches Triathalon Training
3. Jackie Sherrill always greets athletes each Fall with an NCAA rules seminar
2. Social Butterfly Larry Templeton will help you find the right fraternity thats fits your personality.

and the number 1 reason?

You can always count on the Sixpack for support and encouragement, especially from me if you are a basketball player. Not to mention dieting tips from HD6, gambling tips from Fishwater, what Stansbury's bathwater tastes like from Hanmudawg, helpful info on any sport from Ol Blew, Republican Convention info from Brutius, St Louis Cardinal info from DawgatAuburn, and a great soccer website started by Todd4State. Also, since you signed up as a HS Junior, you get free copies of books from Sixpack authors- "Sprinting for Success" by Dawgstudent, "My Life as a Prison Guard" by Patdog, and "Peace and Love is The Only Way" by Thick....

Look forward to seeing you around more, your friend,

Of course, there's the obvious one in 1941 which you probably already know about, or you can read about it in all the history books wikipedia; AND

We won the Meteorological National Championship (there may be a more formal name for it -- not sure about that) earlier this year. Beat out M-I-F'ing-T in the process. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me. This should tell you MSU is the place to be to win championships (and for school and stuff.)

I'm sure someone here can send you an LOI if you're ready to commit early.

Calculus is what would worry me, the Chemisty course I'm taking is on par if not harder than what is offered at most universities. Maybe TV wouldn't be so bad if I have to take all those math courses otherwise. lol.

No one cares about supposed range. And I am a meteorology student myself, and I'm not a Broadcast Meteorology (TV station) student. There is a program in the Geosciences Dept. that is Operational Meteorology (National Weather Service, Private sector, DoA, etc. basically NOT Tv station).

ETA: I obviously didn't read the whole thread.

If you live in Louisiana (LAMSUFAN?), Mize State is as good if not better than any options in that state. You could pay out the nose for Tulane and hang out with coeds who don't use deodorant or shave their legs and armpits. You could choose LSU, which has a beautiful campus and fantastic athletics, yet has issues with crime. Dude, there are some rough slum areas right next to that campus. Personal safety trumps winning football team in my opinion. La Tech? Not even close to the same level (arse whipping of Croom et al be damned). ULM? Smaller school, and you have to live in Monroe; nuf said.

Get your core GPA up to a 3.0 and get at least a 24 ACT, and all out-of-state tuition will be waived. That would make MSU equal if not better from a cost standpoint to any local university in your state. Get a 26 or better ACT score combined with a core GPA greater than 3.0, and you start to get additional scholarships.

Mississippi State is actively pursuing high quality students from nearby states. We have been quite successful recently in Texas on that front. Sounds like you need to get serious about your GPA though over the next 2 semesters if you want scholarships. They are within your reach if you apply yourself.

Well the math and Physics can get hard, but if you do broadcast, you have a much easier track. I'm in the meteorology department too, and it is one of, if not the best broadcast meteorology school in the country. Many of the TV meteorologists in the south graduated from MSU, along with some that are currently spread all over the country. The teachers are really friendly, and are always willing to help out any way they can. I'm on the operational track, so I have a little harder time than the broadcast people, but all the students in the department are really close, and we always help each other out and try and work together when we study or have homework. You can't find a better broadcast meteorology school, and it's very easy to meet people. If you ever need any other info about meteorology just let me know. It's a fantastic department and you would enjoy it very much.

Anybody know off hand what the SAT requirement is to waive out of state tuition? My niece is in for a visit from California in hopes of playing Vball, but they don't typically take the ACT out there... weighted gpa of 4.0

1090 SAT=24 ACT, which is what a student needs to recieve an out-of-state tuition scholarship. It's not a waiver, but a scholarship because MSU has to pay that money to the state.

i came from PA in 2003...have my undergrad and am now getting my masters here. best decision i ever made. perfect combination of school size, town size and things to do. you can also go to tuscaloosa, ole miss, memphis, b'ham, atlanta and new orleans from here pretty easily and we do regularly. the cotton disctrict is great fun. and we have the most underrated gameday atmosphere in the nation for football. of course it's pretty new too. basketball games are intense. no better place to watch baseball than dudy noble.

Say that my GPA stays the same at 2.9, would it still be worth it to attend? (out of state fees and all)

But mostly, great looking women.

Edited to add: Don't let any of that nonsense about academics play any role in your decision. Never let your schooling interfere with your education.
