Sellers draft status. Serious question on his future here

He's sliding for sure. Unless he picks it up these last few games, I can't see it being worth his while to go this year.

That begs some serious questions about his future here: Based on what we've seen from him this season, would we consider him the starter for next year? Would we want him to be? He entered this season as the undisputed starter, but if he stays, should it be an open QB competition in spring and into fall camp?

A lot have wondered whether HE would want to return here, but nobody has asked if WE would want him to return. Do we consider late 2024 Sellers or the 2025 Sellers to be the real Sellers? If the latter, should we move on?

Hope it’s not a case like David Carr drafted by the expansion Texans.Terrible OL ruined him.He was gun shy after taking a beating and never lived up to his potential.Hope that doesn’t happen to Sellers.

I think he has a super high ceiling... I think the play calling has worked against him, and they tried to make him a pocket passer for some reason ..... Let him be him, and I think he'll do great. I don't know much about who's behind him, but just his experience alone is worth a lot IMO. I'd be happy if he were the starter again. 1st thing they need to do is get him to not go backwards, no matter what happens.

Very agreeable. He needs to fix the going backwards & bad sacks as you mentioned above but other than that I am not sure how much of what looks like regression is on him. I’m inclined to think the holding on to the ball too long and tak the bad sacks is a result of poor coaching decisions to make him something he’s not as you said. But now it almost seems habitual so he’s going to unlearn this.

If he’s a “draftable” QB, even sliding to lower rounds, that’s mean’s he still has the ability to be an effective starter. So yes I would want him back. But there should always be open competition every season at every position. True competition makes everyone better.

But someone in his life should talk to him about a consideration to move on. As far as the offense is concerned, his performance, not coaching was what got the team 9 wins. They have not given him an OL and both OC’s he’s been under have stunk. Why should he trust anything will be better next year?

Unfortunately Shula tried to make him into a pocket passer. If the O line had a pulse and he was allowed to roll out I believe you would have seen totally different result this season. He never looks comfortable when he gets the snap and understandably so. He hasn't lost his skill set, just his confidence. Most defenses know they only have to rush four to pressure him which leaves plenty of guys open to cover the receivers. Will say though he is not seeing a lot of open receivers. Maybe he should go back to the goggles.

The main difference between last season and this season, and it harkens back to the bowl game, can be identified in two words that contain neither Shula, Sellers, nor Beamer. Fans got all giddy with the Superman folklore, and some of us tried to tell you (I know; I hate it too when someone says that but if anyone cares to you can go back and look it up over this past summer), but it was what allowed space for Clark Kent to be Superman and without it he becomes this new guy getting his ace kicked on the reg. Without it he’s a one man show, and that’s much much easier to defend.

The two words: Rocket Sanders.

He is on every play running for his life because he doesn't have good blockers. Give him a good line and then see what he does, then if he messing up then it is him. I know yo all say throw it away but when you have been hit like he has you lose your sense of awareness about throwing it away because you are trying to make a play.

Couple points. You're not the only one who ever played.

Him struggling with a bad o-line is a good point. But if we want to see him behind a good o-line, it probably wont be here. That being said, I dont think his deficiencies can be totally attributed to the line. He is struggling.

If he, as you say, is so rattled that he is incapable of the simplest play of throwing it away, I wonder if he should be on the field.

Lastly, you said he would win the Heisman and a national title here. I think you may be a bit too enthusiastic.

Seems like they're looking at pure talent. Pavia is winning games, but no one is talking about him as an NFL QB. Similar to other QBs on good teams.

I would hate to see him turn into an Anthony Richardson or Jamarcus Russel. Unfortunately, he could be on that trajectory. If he stays in school a couple more years, he could really figure out how good of a QB he could be. And if it doesn't work out he'd have his education.

The NFL has been printing money for decades. A third round pick is going to be paid somewhere around 5 million. I have my doubts that NIL money can compete with that, I am sure there are outliers.

First pick in 3rd round makes about $1.5 annually. Sellers allegedly has an NIL value around $3.7 million, but none of that info is public. He also has some brand endorsements. One would have to imagine his NIL valuation has taken a hit.

You bring up a good point. What is Sellers NIL value next season coming off of 4-8 record, what will probably be 10 or so td passes and close to the same number of interceptions and rushing numbers that aren't anything special?

His lackluster season has to have taken away almost all of the power from his threat to transfer.

He was superman down the stretch last year. You can't argue that. It's also not that bad to get drafted in later rounds. Might actually go to a good team. I know the money isn't as good, but maybe a better OL allows you to play better for your contract after your rookie deal.

Do you think go into spring with an open QB battle? I know everyone always has to compete for a spot and blah blah...but we all know Sellers was the starter after last season.

That's optimism on steroids. Unless he shows out and soon, He's looking at the 5th round or later. The NFL is already full of QB-2s that look performance wise like Sellers... flashing from time to time, but not good enough to be a 1.

The fact that it would be possible that he could drafted by the Jets should make him want to play one more year in college. I can't think of a worse place for a QB other than maybe Cleveland. If he does stay in school for another year, my money would be on him to transfer to a school that has the pieces in place that will all but guarantee he'd have a better season than he's had this year.

Then that is just assinine. No qb could operate behind the o-line we have had this year, and eventually it would affect the best qbs mental state and accuracy. We will do what we do to shoot the kid that has done all he could for our program, and he will go to another school with an at least average o-line and scheme with an indentity and do well, get drafted high and everyone around herer will get butt hurt when he mentions that school as his alma mater during NFL games. Will we ever learn......

I agree that we have no scheme or identity, he may also find good coaching at another school too.

He has not developed as we had hoped because of our OL and the play calls by Shula. They should have adjusted the offense when they saw how much duress he was under.

He definitely needs another year of tutelage under a really good OC/QB coach. I hope that will be at SC, but it would not surprise me one bit if he transfers out.

That could be true, but as I said above, he just has not progressed under this staff. Maybe he has peaked. He's just so slow getting the ball out and I think it is because he doesn't see the field well enough.

Yeah, and we all thought (or were led to believe) that Faison could step into that spot. He could not - and neither could Fuller or Adaway.

Maybe Shula did adjust the offense to help him out? The coaches see him in practice every day, they know what he can and can't do. They see the OL in practice every day too. The DL is pretty good, so unless Beamer isn't having the ones go against ones in practice, if not, that is proof Beamer is a bad coach, the coaches know what Sellers can do and what plays they can call for him.

I still think last year was a case of opposing defenses not knowing what they were facing with him. They saw a first year qb and thought, rightfully so, that taking away the passing game and forcing him to scramble was a good idea. They did not know how good of a runner he was. By the bowl game, the book on him was known. Put a spy on him and take away the scramble for big yards and he is an average at best qb.
