As for Mississippi State Athletics, much of our focus this week has been on implementing the new college athletics model that goes into effect on July 1. While this has taken up much of our time, I realize this shift brings a lot of new information. Below, I’ve outlined the basics and shared some key terms you’ll see us use more often as we move forward.

House vs. NCAA Settlement
  • Last Friday, June 6, was a pivotal day in college sports. Judge Claudia Wilken granted final approval in the House v. NCAA settlement, requiring the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in back damages over the next 10 years to former student-athletes who competed from 2016 to the present.
  • Starting July 1 (just 18 days from now), schools in the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC may directly share up to approximately $20.5 million annually with student-athletes. This figure is expected to grow by about 4 percent annually.
  • This $20.5 million is referred to as “Revenue Share”.
  • The $20.5 million acts as a cap - institutions may not exceed this amount without facing serious penalties.
  • Student-athletes may still pursue third-party NIL deals in addition to revenue share. We’ll refer to these as “Third-Party NIL” or “Third-Party Deals”.
  • A new independent enforcement agency, the College Sports Commission, will oversee revenue sharing and NIL compliance.
  • NIL Go, a new monitoring system, will review all third-party deals with a value of $600 or greater to ensure legitimacy in a fair and consistent way.
What This Means for Mississippi State Athletics
  • We will continue to fund scholarships for student-athletes across all sports. In fact, Mississippi State Athletics will be providing 54 more scholarships than in previous years. That is a significant investment in the lives of young people – and while we are proud to provide this support - there are real financial impacts.
  • We will proactively engage in NIL activities, in addition to sharing $20.5 million in revenue with our student-athletes.
  • We will support and educate our student-athletes on how to pursue legitimate third-party NIL opportunities outside of scholarships and revenue share.
Business owners: Please consider partnering with our student-athletes to promote your business! For more information, contact the Bulldog Club at [email protected] or Bulldog Sports Properties at [email protected]or click the link below.

NIL PARTNER FORM +
Though revenue sharing introduces more consistency and fairness, local community involvement in NIL will still differentiate programs. Communities that actively support legitimate NIL opportunities for student-athleteswill provide them with a significant advantage.

Three Main Ways Student-Athletes Can Earn Compensation

1. Scholarship Support

2. Revenue Share

3. Third-Party NIL Deals (cleared through NIL Go)

How You Can Support

1. Follow our student-athletes on social media. In the coming weeks, we will share information on how to make this as easy on you as possible with step by step instructions and a directory of our student-athletes’ profiles.

2. Invest in the State Excellence Fund. This fund enables us to meet the demands of the $20.5 million annual commitment while advancing our department’s vision.

3. Partner with student-athletes to promote your business or event!

NIL PARTNER FORM +
I know there are institutions and fan bases lamenting the new era - but, as Coach O’Connor told me recently, “We’re just going to plow through it.” Those who embrace change will look back knowing they helped elevate the community and the institution they love. That is what we intend to do.

I tip my cap to him. He is trying and doing all he can. It's up to State fans to do the rest.

I won't blame anyone for not paying NIL. However I read article today that State was dead last in the conference in ticket sales revenue. (Vandy doesn't report their numbers).

So buy some tickets Maroons.

I went to one game last year. It was the most miserable experience I have ever had at a sporting event. I am not lighting money on fire like that again. I can easily be brought back, but not by the current product

Does the $20.5 million revenue share get shared equally with all student athletes? With Title IX, I would think women along with all men on scholarship get an equal share. What do walk-ons get? They practice just as hard as the schollie players, but get very little PT. It appears the extra value comes in the NIL arena. Am I somewhat on track?.....admit I don't study this stuff much.....just skimmed over the basics.

Yeah, that's the difference in SC fans and MSU fans. We go 0-8 in conference, we're dead last in attendance. SC goes 0-8 and they are in the SEC top 8 for attendance. Back in the day I think the Cocks went 0-12 or 1-11 one year and still packed in 80,000 every game.

Well now to be fair, Columbia is a wee bit bigger than Starkville. And the professional football teams nearest them all historically suck: Jacksonville, Carolina, and Atlanta. So they either attend Carolina or Clemson football games if they want to support college football.

For now, the $20.5 million can be distributed however the school sees fit. I don't know if every athlete has to receive a share, but it seems like they should. The shares will not be equal, though, and walk ons should expect a smaller share.

However, as I understand the settlement, scholarship limits are being eliminated, and replaced with roster limits. The schools can give scholarships to every single player on the roster, eliminating the concept of walk on.

This roster limits will seriously reduce participation in non revenue sports, though.

As for Title IX, that has yet to be determined. The schools are moving forward as though Title IX does not apply to these payments. There is already a Title IX lawsuit over the back damages award, and we can expect a lawsuit over the revenue sharing as well.

After reading this, It’s embarrassing John Cohen led our athletic department for as long as he did.

The 2018 football team will forever be the biggest “what-if” in Mississippi State sports history. Cohen’s mishandling ruined the most talented football team we ever had.

Of course, I know State won't do this.... but is there scholarship minimums?

Just have 70-75 scholarships for football, 12 basketball, 20 baseball and so on......then your rev share is a bigger piece of the pie per athlete.

Pretty sure every P4 school will max out their rosters, but I suppose they dont have to.

And to amend slightly what I said above, while the rules allow everyone on the roster to get a scholarship, Title IX requires scholarships be split proportionally between men and women. So the numbers may not work out for all the male athletes to get scholarships.

The Football roster is now 105, and that could mean 20 additional men's scholarships. The softball and soccer rosters are increasing, too, which could balance that out. Plus, the track rosters are expanding quite a bit.

Since we're a baseball school, the baseball roster will be 34, and we can give all of them scholarships. But that's 22.3 additional men's scholarships.

I think a creative move would be giving more revenue share to the players who can't demand high dollars on the open market. Let your QB1 get his money from 3rd party NIL deals, and pay more revenue share to other players.

QB1 probably wouldn't like that, though.

Whatever the excuse, he’s still right that that is the main reason why our football culture and program sucks traditionally.

Yep. I've never been to Columbia SC. But I can tell you in Columbus MS maybe a hand full of State fans go to games and double sit at home complaining on Facebook.
