Rumor is that he was caught because his daughter took one of the ancestry DNA kits. Name is Joseph DeAngelo.

That's awesome if true... but not something the police should disclose, keep their methods secret.

But wait, so when you do that ancestry.com your DNA goes into a federal database or atleast accessible to the government? THat's not awesome if true.

Probably just a rumor. They certainly wouldn't let it be known if it were true.

Just piecing together some of the info from the press conference - they said they obtained his DNA from outside sources or something along those lines. Most likely from his trash. They also said he wasn't known up until about a week ago. A familial DNA match is a strong possibility IMO, however it was obtained.

BTW Scot free origin---The origin of the phrase is traced to Scandinavia & the word 'scot' meaning 'payment'. Around the 13th century a municiple tax called 'scot' was imposed on the scandinavian people. All households were required to pay according to their means but the peasants were exempt. They were known as 'scot free'.

Could a serial killer such as the Zodiac or the golden state killer avoid being caught for so long today? With cell phones, surveillance, dna testing, linked police data bases and more media coverage it would be far more difficult to avoid capture.

Going 40 to 50 years without being a suspect would require superior intelligence and knowledge of police tactics. The GSK was a former cop while the Zodiac wore military boots and had advanced knowledge of cryptography, they suspect he was a serviceman.

It would be virtually impossible to get away with that many crimes today.

1. DNA

2. Cellphones

3. Cameras everywhere.

Not a good time to be a criminal.

The Golden State Killer has been caught. One of the top unsolved cases in the country.

He has apparently admitted to being this guy also:

They submitted crime scene dna to a small, free open source site called GEDmatch.com. They had a match with a close relative and then all they had to do was track down relatives in the 60-75 year old range and go through those close relatives garbage to get an exact match.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy...is-firm-was-key-for-golden-state-killer-case/

23andme and Ancestry.com have denied that they will share information with law enforcement without a warrant.

Well for one thing I never said murder can’t happen anymore but secondly and maybe most importantly the example you gave has nothing to do with a serial killer spanning 40 to 50 years. Drop this bombshell on me after double digits murders from the same person in 40 to 50 years and I’ll cede the point.

One of the crazier parts to this story, at the height of terror there were townhalls and such meetings going on because of a worried public...at one of them a man asked with some disbelief how a rapist could get away with raping a man’s wife while the husband was in the room. 7 months later that questioner and his wife were targeted in one of the most brutal attacks. Investigators are certain the rapist was at the meeting.

I was just asking not arguing. Hopefully DNA nails him. I agree with you. Didn't mean to seem argumentative. I was too lazy to look.

I will be surprised if this is not a serial killer.
