This isn't rocket science. Every football coach knows you have to have solid trenches, a good nucleus of talented players, and that you have to keep replenishing that pool of players through recruiting. That combined with a sound scheme and you are good to go.
The West Coast is known as much for being a "mode of operation" as is it is an innovative offense. It is a philosophy and way to go about winning football games and building programs (preferably professional programs). Unfortunately, though we are all tired of hearing the word, executing the WCO philosophy at this level is ambitious (at best).
Jackie had a plan too...and who says it was a bad one? Recruit massive O-lines, ram the ball down the opposing teams throats, and let Joe Lee's safeties/LB's murder people on defense. Leave the other team wishing they stayed home that day. That too was effective and fun to watch. I will always have fond memories of JJ, M. Davis, etc. busting heads and Coop, Tim Nelson, etc. ripping QBs and WRs.
From all we have heard from Hud/Mullen/Meyer...they gush over the spread like Greek philosophers. It is an ideology to them, find a way to get the ball into the playmakers hands in space, at all costs. Ironically, it is simple by nature. Kind of like Bull Durham, you throw the ball, you catch the ball, you [run] with the ball. H.S. teams all over the country are running it. It is not about ball control or imposing your will, like Jackie's brand of football - but like Jackie's brand of football, I think it will also be effective and fun to watch. As I have said to friends, if we can't score some (serious) points with Mullen and Hud running the show, we never will.
