I thought Shaka Smart would have been a great fit for Northwestern when he was at VCU, but alas he went to Texas, and who could say no to that job. Things didn't work out for him there, and now he has Marquette competitive in his first year there.

My question is, IF Northwestern wanted to try a new coach, would it be able to lure someone like Smart? I have seen estimates that put CC earning $3 million a year, and SS getting about $1.2 million at Marquette. I have to imagine Northwestern has a bigger budget with the B1G cash. On the flip side, Northwestern has its issues, but as we have seen, NU is also very patient with coaches. Marquette probably doesn't pay as well, but they have other advantages NU doesn't.

Regardless if you think Smart is the right for for Northwestern, do you think NU can pull someone in a similar coaching situation?

I would be very surprised if SS is being paid just 1.2 million at Marquette. Private University doesn’t have to disclose everything.

He would be a fool to leave Marquette for NU without getting some meaningful academic concessions. And a sizable pay bump. Under those terms NU could be a great stepping stone for SS returning to every short list at the top blue bloods in the Country.

Unless NU is willing to overpay they are very unlikely to get a “name” coach imo. And I’m ok with that. Name coaches come from somewhere- NU needs to find one of the next “name” coaches. Identify a coach who has had success at a lower level, is known for a strategy, and wants to go to the highest level of college b-ball ie the Big 10.

If such a scenario arose, I assume NU would be getting played by SS to simply get a raise at Marquette.

I believe SS is originally from Wisconsin and also has family up there.

IIRC, Shaka's wife is a NU grad. All things being equal (which admittedly they're not), perhaps that could be a plus in the Shaka-to-NU column.

MU is on Fox here in Chicago. Looks like a great game environment unlike our empty Wilson club. I had a friend who went to the NEB game and in the seats above the basket he counted 10 people.

Since we’re on the subject of premature replacement coaches, would Tavaras Hardy even be a thought in e-town how would wildcat faithful feel about him coming back to coach?
