Expanding on the attendance topic a little:

We had crowds of 5212, 5384, and 4190 over the weekend. I was actually pretty disappointed in the Saturday crowd. It's typically 30-50% more than the Friday crowd.Considering the fact that were in the midst of a 5 game winning streak, it was UM, and the weather was great, I was expecting 7,000. It didn't happen.

There are a lot of popular opinions of why attendance is way down, besides wins and losses, and I think many play a part -

1. Economy.
2. Emergence of little league baseball travel teams.
3. Style of Cohen baseball and low excitement level.
4. Ron Polk purists.
5. Aging core fan base that can no longer attend and don't have kids that share the same passion and will use their seats.
6. Aging facilities.

Frankly, I think that many of these reasons, like economy, Polk, and facilities, involve a very small part of the MSU baseball community and are partly just excuses for lack of interest. None of the reason are anything that can't be overcome with winning. I think to really get back to a high attendance average, we are going to have to bring in the fences. As future hall of famer Greg Maddux once said "Chicks dig the long ball.", and guys love chicks. There needs to be that anticipation that a homerun is possible. It really makes the game more fun to the average fan. Now, it's a rare surprise if a hard hit ball doesn't get hauled in at the warning track.

I appreciate what Stricklin is trying to do, but I don't want DNF to turn into a bush league circus between innings. Yeah, it's kind of funny seeing some dizzy guy running with a money dress on, but let's not overdo it. There's only 90 seconds between innings now, so that's hardly enough time to do anything of substance. I don't think those kinds of things attract fans. I did like the fireworks show. That's always a crowd favorite.

However, Fitt only attended the Sunday game this past weekend

SEBaseball.com writer Barry Allen did cover all three games on their web site from the weekend series

It will be interesting to see what happens when we host a regional because a lot of people think that is what will turn the corner as far as attendance.

I'm just not sure that I buy that. I think the regional will be well attended- the grandstand is packed out because that's when the season ticket holders show up.

That's the real issue- we need to get those people to come to more than just the regional.

Maybe something where we have a deal where you can reserve your spot for a regional if you have had season tickets in the past for a fee before the season, and if you only want to go to the regional and not the regular season games, you can just choose to not buy season tickets for the regular season. Once people have reserved their spots for a regional, then sell the regular season tickets separately.

As far as I know, the open grandstand thing worked out OK. At least the AD is doing something to try to get people there.

  • They should advertise promotions of like kids in ball uniforms get in free.
  • We use to tear up some 25c hot dog night
  • Maybe offer a game free open to the public

Just to test the support, for a game or two

It really sucks to drive a 3 hours and pay 40 bucks for a family of four and sit on metal bleachers and look to the right or left for 2.5 hours, then you spend 40 dollars at the concession stand. basically you could spend 120-150 for 8 hours watching a team play baseball or find something closer to your house, because there is always something to do. #honeydo

...as I'm a broken record on this point: A prolonged winning streak.

This season Baylor went on a 24 game winning streak.

Can you imagine if MSU went on a 24 game winning streak?

They would have to call out the state troopers to direct weekend traffic in Oktibbeha County.

Lastly, if you want to keep winning weekend series against teams like Ole Miss, you are going to have to stop the chatter about bringing in the fences.

If you transform Dudy-Noble into a bandbox, Ole Miss has enough pop in their lineup to go yard 6 times in one game.

That's something that MSU doesn't come close to having.

So you better be glad Dudy-Noble is a pitchers' park, or this squad would dead in the water right now.
