Or against the Hoos. We are, in fact, playing their arch rivals. That helps.

But yes, cool to see him showing his support.

Must've have been a real minor role

Was he a grad assistant? And Dad hired him at VaTech?

I think he was a position coach. My theory is he saw that the USS Slytanic was a sinking ship and went to a staff headed by someone semi-competent.

I think he started as a GA and then was a position coach before going to VT with his dad. It was definitely during the Croom era, as I watched part of a VT game in a hotel bar in Nashville in 2004, and he stopped by briefly to watch before State played (lost to) Vandy that day.

I think this was early on when people had some form of respect for Croom as a football mind. I think it was a "hey, I want to earn my stripes on someone's staff other than my dad's but eventually I want to end up at VT" kind of deal, so he was in and out.

We had some quality assistants before anyone figured out Croom had the coaching ability of a Starkville Pop Warner volunteer. Jimmy... Clausen.. Klausen... however you spell it, his brother was also a GA I believe. I think he was actually a GA at the time Jimmy was going through recruitment too.
