Good candidate for 2020 if Joe flames on out. He looked like a beat man in the presser

We got lucky hiring a coordinator in Mullen and him being great. We need to hire someone as a proven HC at least on the P5 level. Our choices last time around were Pruitt, Morris and Jomo. We would have sucked anyway. I know Morris was a HC at SMU, but he proved nothing and was only a few years removed from being an OC.

I say go with a coach who's proven something at the HC level: Pellini, Fickel, PJ Fleck, Hudspeth, Billy Napier (one of my top choices), Todd Monken or Matt Campbell is where I would start.

Besides Chad Morris having an awful losing record at SMU (14-22) and Napier on his way of having back to back winning seasons (regular season) in his first two years as a HC?

You could throw in Chad Morris losing to Colorado State, North Texas and San Jose State...while he's been at Arkansas. Could also throw in losing to Vandy and Kentucky at Arkansas.

Napier also coached under Saban.

Morris took over one of the worst programs in the country in SMU, and they improved each year he was there. He proved he could be a successful G5 head coach, which is all Napier has proven. His team has also improved each year he's been there.

You take Chad Morris then, man. I'd take Napier in a heart beat, but I also listed some others as well. Again, look who Morris has lost to while at Arkansas with much better talent.

Are you honestly this dense? Of course I wouldn't take Morris. He has since proven that he can't hack it in the SEC. Maybe Napier can. I have no idea.

The point is that Napier at this point has proven nothing that Morris hadn't also proven when Arkansas hired him.

I said proven "something." Napier thus far has proven he can organize a damn football team and win more than he loses. The others I have listed have proven more than Napier and in my opinion, Napier has proven more than Morris and his team is better in year 2 than they were in year 1. I think you're the one being dense.

Bill Clark has NEVER coached big-time CFB

Bill Clark is the other we should look at.

He was a longtime, respected HS HC in Alabama before Joey Jones (yes, that Joey Jones) hired him to be DC at USA, one year at Jacksonville State as HC and the last 5 as HC at UAB...... he’s done well at the level he was coached, but moving from UAB to MSU is such a step. I think that is part of Joe’s problem, he did not have enough experience at the top level of CFB.

We need someone with more time in P5 programs, specifically SEC.

You’d rather have an SEC assistant than a successful program builder and recruiter at the G5 level?

I’d rather see us hire a Clark or Mike Norvell than another coordinator who has to learn the CEO part of being a head coach.

Meh, you can get hung up on the “SEC experience” thing and still end up hiring someone who’s not any good. That’s not the end-all be-all to me. Just hire a dude that is a program builder and can flat out coach.

Clark has been a miracle worker at UAB. They had nine straight losing seasons before he arrived, he’s never had a single one there. One bowl trip in their history prior to Clark, he’s been to two in the two years following a return from a self-imposed death penalty. The guy literally helped save a program from extinction. Culturally he would likely be a very good fit as well.

Not saying the lack of major conference experience isn’t a valid question, but the guy’s track record at the places he’s been is extremely impressive. And frankly, I would rather have someone who has proven themselves as a head coach than an assistant who has worked at bigger schools but we have no idea if they can handle the task of being the man in charge.

Here is a good thought. Let's leave the decision up to someone who gets paid to do it. John Cohen. I'm not getting the warm and fuzzy from most of y'alls candidates. They don't have any bettervwuslifications thsn the guy we already have. And if you fire him after 2 years you damn sure better make sure the next guy is the right one.

I think Will Fritz would be one of my top choices. Good chance he will bring Tulane in next year and whip Joe's *** if they're both still at their respective schools.

Honestly this isn't a bad idea. He'll have been around enough programs to devolop a good staff too.

Does everyone see that the mass exodos of assistants leaving after they all were claiming in 2018 that they came to work with Moorhead was a huge red flag?

Bill Clark came to UAB the year after UCF, Memphis, Houston, ECU, etc. all left CUSA to form the AAC. Not saying he hasn't done a good job there, because he has, but comparing their record before 2013 and since then is comparing apples to oranges. The conference got a lot weaker.

Funny... both of those statements applied to Moorhead when we hired him. It just shows that hiring coaches is essentially a crap shoot and that just because someone looks good on paper by whatever criteria you value doesn't mean they're going to be able to get it done.

They literally closed the doors to the program for a year. Death penalty. He fired it back up and went to a bowl game the very next year. Yeah competition level is low, but he's working with the same resources as his competition...except he literally had to start over. The transformation around campus is pretty amazing and they have a new stadium coming all because of the excitement he is generating from the top. Maybe there is someone out there better, but I would switch coaches with UAB tomorrow and not look back.

There is just something weird about Clark that doesn’t pass the smell test. It may just be that he’s such a big home body. He’s literally never left the state of Alabama in his entire coaching career that spans 30 years. Its hard to imagine that he hasn’t gotten a single offer from somewhere in one of the other 49 states over that period. He’s had too much success to not have gotten any other opportunities, so I’m guessing he’s turned them down. Maybe that is his loyalty to his home state, but it may also be perceived by some as lack of ambition or not willing to expand his horizons / take a risk. Either way, it’s definitely unconventional for someone with his level of success.

Matt Rhule had a losing record through his first three years at Temple, and now he has Baylor at 6-0.

Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to why some coaches do or don't work out. I doubt anyone ever thought Chip Kelley would look this bad 5 years ago.

He was a GA at PSU under Moorhead. That's where he learned that offense. Seems to be doing pretty good there. 55 points a game. Record setting offense. Wonder why it wouldn't work here ? Strange

LSU is not running Moorehead’s offense. Brady and the OC developed their passing system this spring but he spent a lot more time with Sean Payton. The philosophy and system is more that than Moorehead. They did take some of Joe’s RPO scheme to incorporate into their system. But they are not a full RPO scheme and the base scheme and philosophy of their system is more heavily rooted from Payton’s system. They also have some of his William & Mary stuff in the system with others added as well. It was kind of a conglomeration of various schemes. The tempo, how they use personnel, concept of attack you see a fair amount of the Saints footprint in that
