"We are trying to get six or seven yards so we can go kick a field goal just so we can make it easier on him," Shapen detailed. "Coach trusted me in that spot to be able to take care of the football."

"Basically, it was a six-yard option route where it can break out or in or sit, and in that situation, I just have to take care of the ball better," Shapen said of the final offensive play. "I felt like I was hot, and I was trying to get the ball out of my hands, but in that scenario, all we need to do is kick a field goal, and we win the game. That is completely on me. I have to be better in that spot."

"I think it was the nose guard who dropped, and I never even saw him. I am setting to the right side so I never saw him. In that moment, you just have to be prepared for some guys to drop in coverage. I was trying to get the ball out fast, but right there, I should have just tried to throw the ball away."

"I feel like today we responded well on offense when things were not going great. We were able to settle down," Shapen said. "I like the way we fought at the end, but I did not come here to lose. People can say whatever, but none of it matters because we know how good we are. We came here to win today, and whenever you do not, it is frustrating."

I do feel for the guy because it's gotta be tough behind this oline, but hes gotta find a way to be smarter with the ball. Those misses deep made all the difference. There wasn't anyone on our team in the path of that last throw. Taking multiple sacks when you can throw the ball away can't happen.

Appropriate comments.
Are those actual verbal quotes? Or is that essentially written statements given to a reporter?

What he says doesn't really matter much; doesn't change anything on the field. But I still think that's about as good of a statement as he can make. Not fun having to rehash your mistakes, particularly when they cost your teammates, but that sounds about as good of an approach as he can take.

Yeah I’m curious because if that was an actual in person comment I am very impressed

During my tirade after the INT that resembled Clark griswald during Christmas vacation, the only time I paused is when it showed Shapen sitting on the bench just staring into the distance. I honestly felt bad for him.

The cameras were zoomed in on him because he single handedly botched the game. Even his teammates were disgusted by it. Plus we were all sold on the fact he was a 5th year senior with experience and he makes a pee wee mistake like that.
And make no mistake, if ferrie would have missed the FG, the camera would be zoomed in on him and you’d be feeling sorry for him instead.

What really sucks on that last play is Thompson had done a double move and left the safety flat footed. He would be walking into the end zone by himself.
He had tunnel vision for one guy and it burned him. At least one of the slants from the left was open also.

ETA: in his defense, it's all he had time for. He was pressured by an unblocked man on the edge.

Looks like the verbatim quotes of his press conference.

Good comments but there's absolutely no excuse for them coming out of a timeout to have any confusion at all. It's still on Lebby.

I appreciate the honesty, but the fact that Shapen didn’t see a 6’2 300 lb body out there all by himself in space is exhibit A as to why you can’t put him in this type of situation. There are too many times that the game is just too fast for him.

Unlike our coach, though, props to Shapen for admitting his 17 up

This is what I thought when I looked at his comments. Lebby is not a moron, so I would assume he knew some heat would come from the decision he made not to run the ball then clock it for the kick. Anyone with any sense should be able to know after that decision it will be criticized. At that point, if you are Lebs, you have two choices. 1-Try to defend it and act like the smartest guy in the room when it comes to football. 2-Defuse the fan base by saying it was a mistake, and I take that on me. Obviously, he chose door number 1. This is what I suspect is hardest for fans that work jobs every day that require them to be accountable for mistakes when they are making 1/10 of what Lebby is making. All he had to do was say that was a mistake. I take it on me, next question. Just one Devil's opinion.
