Shapen is the best QB to run our offense right now...

When Kamario comes in, everyone knows what's about to happen. They need to get him a couple of more plays to mix in
People keep saying that. But we’ve never seen him try to read an SEC defense before. I suspect there’s a reason he’s not throwing the ball in those situations. He’s not ready to do what a lot of yall want him to do right now.

KT should have been in on those last 2 plays… just run the option
You’d figure SEC Coaches would just know and realize that. They HAVE to build in packages for him to utilize his ability. It’s just a no-brainer. If you have a Freak…let him loose. You need a run threat at QB in the SEC. We don’t have 5 * at WR or TE. You have to have another option. TN didn’t give a 17 about Shapen taking off.

I don't think anybody in this thread said anything about him being "the best" QB at MSU. The thread is about expanding his role when he's in there instead of running him every damn play
Expanding his role while in there …. Couldn’t have said it better.

Nobody has really stopped him running which is what makes it so good. When you have plays that get positive yardage even when teams know it’s coming there is no need to over complicate it

The best QB at MSU is always the back up, unless the starter is Dak. That's been our mantra for my 50+ years as a fan.
You're right the shear athleticism of that run by Shapen from the 5 in OT was hesimanesque, actually every time he ran the ball***

When you are inside the 10 yard line the field is short so your vision is focused on quick runs or throws. Also, with him in the game it opens or spreads the defense more. Crazy not to play him in certain situation even early in the game.

Yet they had a spy on Shapen.

One of difference from Tenn us is they had a 6"5" All American WR when their QB got in trouble all he had to know is where he was and throw the ball his way higher than anyone else could jump.

Shapen is definitely better than Aguilar. We definitely could use a brassel receiver. I just got pissed several times we knew it was coming to him and still didn't stop it

Shapen’s ability to pass is what opens up the run game. If we “expand Kamario’s role”, that takes away from that progressive run development. So if we do it, we’re going to need to stick with him for a while and let him throw (and hopefully succeed doing it) to get those things on film so teams have to defend it.

If we don’t, well, every team will shut it down like last night.

This is why there were so many run lanes in Leach’s offense - the throw game, developed over time - opened them up.

Same thing that MRA has done over the years.

So I will say at least Lebby has that part right. He knows we must have the legitimate long ball threat. Our fans are just obsessed with running QBs.

It's the same old nonsense I've heard my whole life. Be careful what you wish for.

Now that I think about it, he may honestly be the only QB we've had in my lifetime who didn't get booed and have fans calling to bench him.

You might say Sleepy, but he got hurt early.

Our fans just don't understand football. It's the culture I'm always talking about.

We have the best QB we have ever had.. and we will not let Him play. Shapen is an average qb. Dammit-play Kamario. Kamario is at His best when he throws it. Ya'll act like he is just a runner. He can make ever throw in the book. Shapen, hold the ball too long , the receiver has to be wideopen .He sucks when he runs. At least put KT in when we are in the red zone. Fluff and KT in backfield will help or WRs get open. at some point Lebby will go ahead and play KT, hope it is sooner than later.

My guess is that he CAN make every throw in the book, but he likely cannot yet read defenses at the college level well enough to understand coverage pre-snap and make the correct reads to know who he should be throwing it to. Going from MS high school dominance to SEC dominance is not a just add water kind of endeavor. He has potential to be great, but our coaches see what he is capable of every day in practice and are using him where he best fits in right now.

Exactly. He may turn out to be the best we've ever had. But he's not the best on the team right now.

This is true, but he is advanced enough to do more than run 1 play. You have to build in some safe 1 read and go if it isn’t there passes for him or it’s not going to work. The defense has to know that we will at least attempt to throw the football when we are in the game.

I always laugh when a strong 2nd guy is best person claims they were right when the guy does turn out to be great a year later, totally discounting the year of learning that passed between when they first started calling for him and when he actually took over full time duties. Kinda like persistently declaring that the stock market is heading for a downturn/upturn...

So much talk about QB. The game defining play was when our LT didn't even slow down the UT defensive end and allowed a blind-side shot on Shapen.. Even if we stall on that drive and punt, the game is completely different without the scoop and score.
