The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported last week that Sean Payton was relieved that defensive line coach Ed Orgeron had left the Saints' staff to take a job with the University of Tennessee.

Citing a source close to Payton, the paper said Orgeron's interest in taking a job with either LSU or Tennessee was a distraction in the closing weeks of the regular season. As a result, Orgeron was focused more on his future rather than on the job he already had.

Also, Payton was apparently not pleased with the progress of the defensive line under Orgeron, who was hired last January at the Senior Bowl after he was fired as Ole Miss' head coach.

picture in the mobile press with payton talking to O in the stands during a senior bowl practice.
Payton was talking to him very expressively (hand waving, etc) & coach O had the "thousand yard stare" down perfect.
pretty good unintentional humor.
i'll see if i can find a link...

should have realized the guy is a recruiter primarily and only coaches as a sideline job. That combo doesn't work too well in the NFL.

Exactly, and that's why the Saints hire of Orgeron baffled me. His biggest strength as a coach is his relentlessness as a recruiter. As a position coach, he's probably below average. As a coordinator or head man, he's definitely below average to awful.

He's also a pretty good evaluator of talent, at least for non-QB positions, but outside of that, he's just a recruiter. Evaluating talent and recruiting are two skills not needed in any fashion as an NFL position coach.

Those Kiffins better be able to coach them some football because between Orgeron and Drayton, they pretty much have two non-performers on game day.

On a side note, Kiffin's hot wife gave birth to a son yesterday. Named him Knox. Isn't that cute?

Im sorry . I have had it . It doesnt take a rule17in' rocket scientist to figure out how to recruit. With all of the premium websites out there now and evaluators of talent, it is not that hard to figure out who to go after. Yes, he probably works very hard at it , but when a guy has 4 stars beside his name it is not that hard to get in your Hummer and drop off a bag of money at his doorstep. This guy has everyone fooled and I cannot believe he has had this much success since Ole MIss relieved him of his duties.
