Last week only four of our teams played but this week the remaining two will swing into action as well. No one has their bye this week so all six local teams will hit the turf. Again there will be opportunities for neutral fans to just go out and "see a game" without having to drive very far, assuming there are people who do that. Here is our slate for this Friday:
Parry McCluer at Buffalo Gap: Each of these were quite frankly taken to the woodshed last week in games where the winners might not have been a surprise but the margins certainly were. So this one will be all about who has been able to lick their wounds the fastest and regain some confidence. I am more inclined to go with the Bison in this one.
Fort Defiance at Liberty Bedford: Since this is the season opener for the Indians and these two have little if any history, this one is anybody's guess. Having read about the Fort dropping a scrimmage to Page County, and knowing that the Minutemen have the home field would make it seem like the Indians might have a long bus ride home.
Glenvar at Riverheads: If there is a "marquee" game this week, it would appear to be this one. The two have never met but each one has been a regular fixture in the playoffs year after year. Glenvar won the 2-A title back in 2014 and of course the Gladiators are the three-time defending champs in 1-A. I will of COURSE be there, and if there are indeed any of you "neutrals" out there, then (hint) this is the game you should go to. I will go with the Big Red for the win but anything could happen.
Staunton at Covington: In Jake Phillips' debut, the Storm heads over the mountain to take on the Cougars. Again nothing really to go on, but just on the size of the two schools and their overall tradition, you would assume that the (oops almost said Leemen!) will prevail in this one, but it sure would be a feather in the Covington caps if they could knock off the guys from the big city.
Stuarts Draft at Waynesboro: All I can say about this one is: be gentle. Once it gets up to 35-0 or 42-0, please be "Nice" about it (that one will make sense to us locals) and put in some subs and let everybody play. As for the Giants, keep plugging away and just try to get that first TD of the season this week. You might be surprised how much of a confidence boost that would be.
Wilson at Luray: The Hornets are of course flying high after rolling all over Waynesboro last week, but I would not get too over-confident if I were you. The Bulldogs you are facing this week are just a "little bit" tougher than the Little Giants. Luray never really "dominated" any Augusta County team during their time in the Shenandoah, so there is no reason to automatically assume they will win this one, but I think they are the safer pick.
