As mentioned earlier in the week, the Shenandoah District has nine teams, so on most Tuesday and Friday nights, there will be four district games, leaving one team to either take the night off or play outside the district. So for this Friday the 19th, there will be four such games with Riverheads being the inactive team. In fact the Gladiators do not play again they host a holiday tournament on the 29th and 30th.
Among those four district games are two that might give us some early insight into who is hot and who is not. However I am already beginning to think that the field of contenders is shrinking and that we may only have three teams this season that can challenge for the district title instead of the four or five that I might have originally considered. So here is the slate for this weekend, starting with a make-up game Thursday night between Rockbridge and Staunton that may start before I even finish this post!
THURSDAY: ROCKBRIDGE AT STAUNTON: It is what it is and The Storm will roll in this one.
FRIDAY GAMES:
STUARTS DRAFT AT ALLEGHANY: This was certainly a much anticipated game during football season and may be in basketball. But I found out this week that SD does not have the size and depth I expected to see. On the other hand, the (AHS) Cougars already own a win over a very good Rocktown team. We know that the Cougars are guaranteed to win this one.........as for which set of Cougars, I will have to go with the one that will not have to travel far to get there.
BUFFALO GAP AT ROCKBRIDGE: This one will be all about two teams looking for improvement and that first district win. On paper it looks like a toss-up. I will go with the Bison in a low-scoring tight one.
FORT DEFIANCE AT WILSON: This has the potential to be a big early-season showdown, but Wilson has amazing depth and i just don't see as much of it on the Indian roster. Look for the visitors to keep it close for a while, but the Hornets will pull away to win by 15 or so. Your real showdowns for the rest of the season will be any game that features any combination of Alleghany, Staunton and Wilson.
WAYNESBORO AT STAUNTON: The rivalry aspect of this one will always make it interesting, but I think Staunton will easily pick up its second home win of the week,
