In the summer of 2002, a homeless Oher slept on the floor of an acquaintance in Memphis named Tony Henderson. A huge man known to the locals as "Big Tony," he had promised his dying mother that he would enroll his son in parochial school. Henderson decided he'd try to place Oher there, too.

The two ended up at Briarcrest Christian School, where Oher, then a junior, played organized football for only the second time.

It was at Briarcrest that he met Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy of Memphis, whose daughter attended the school. They'd heard of Oher's difficult times and met with him at the school. They eventually took such an interest in him - and such a liking to him - that they eventually brought him into their home.

for the chance that the kid may start playing football, go to Ole Miss and possibly one day go to the NFL? The Touhys can buy anything they want, look at this intelligently. Plus, hasn't this whole insane argument been done, oh say five years ago?

I wasn't arguing anything, just correcting Jack, now you.

Watch this video and start listening to what the man himself says around 1:00. I find it funny that some have trouble admitting that he was a football player prior to going to Briarcrest. In effect, that is one version of the story.

Either way, it's always good when someone can better themselves.

Let's run this down this thread so far...

jackstefano: There's nothing to it. He was only fourteen.
biguglykidjoe: Here's an article plainly stating he was a junior in high school when he met the Touhey's.
jackstefano: You're just making that up. My facts come from the Spirit. Step to that.

Then on the other side you've got The Liar asking us to discuss this intelligently. And what is his premise for this intelligent discussion? That the Touhey's are wealthy, so they wouldn't have any interest in potential college football players. (let that sink in)

...I've heard the probably true one which is that he went to school with their daughter, they met him that way, blah blah blah. BUT the OTHER story came out of Mrs. Tuhoy's (sp?) mouth at the Cotton Bowl. She stated that they saw Oher on the side of the road and he looked like he was in need so they decided to pull the car over. The rest is history....or a flat-out lie to make yourself look better on national TV.

I'm not discounting what they did for the guy. I'm sure they really are nice people. But it looked a little suspicious when she told a totally different version of the story on TV.

I don't believe an Ole Miss fan doesn't know all of the details of the Oher story, especially one actively involved on message boards. So quit playing coy and ignorant, and just admit you don't think there is anything strange about that situation.

This was all just coincidence and luck. It is really heartwarming story written by an unbiased third party who has never even met the family and covered by television reporter with no affiliation with the University.

Something to the effect that Oher was in school with the daughter. At some point he was way underdressed during the middle of winter and was walking to the gym to shoot hoops and stay warm. Mrs. Touhy saw him and pulled the car over (im assuming this was at school) and ...... the rest is history.

I think its a real good story. I will admit I was one of the ones crying foul when it first came out, but now that he is gone from Ole Miss I have no more problem with the situation. At least it sheds some good light on the south, specifically Mississippi.

that everyone is arguing about. I really don't care either way. I really don't think they adopted him for the one in a million chance he would turn out to be a first round draft pick though. Or even so that he would play for Ole Miss. But I don't know those details.

i didn't mean to insult you, if i did. there are just so many versions of the story floating around and i don't think it's fair to take sides one way or the other.
