Has anyone else heard the rumors going around that Oktibbeha County Sheriffs are going to be going around the Junction this year handing out tickets for beer. I heard they need revenue bad and while liquor isn't illegal in the county but beer is, they are going to be handing out tickets regardless of age. Anyone else hearing the same thing?

Starkville is a wet municipality. The county, however, is beer dry with the exception of the 'resort' known as Cowbells. Don't know exactly where the city ends but the junction probably is within their jurisdiction. But I seriously doubt they'll be ticketing anybody with beer in a cup.
The university has it's own police force. Is the sheriff's department allowed to police the campus?
Pretty dumb 17'n law. It's legal to have liquor and wine but not beer. Doesn't that make perfect sense? I got a ticket for beer possession on the way to a crawfish boil Super Bulldog Weekend. I was literally 1/4 mile outside of the city limits. The ticket was to the tune of $228. Also had to pour out two cases of beer.
Somebody told me once that the county considers legal liquor to be anything above 6% ABV.
Guess I'll be getting ripped with high gravity beer on gameday in order to stay legal.
If they are really going to hand out tickets for beer then they are not really thinking about what it will start. By the third game of the year tailgaters will be switching from bud light to johnny walker to avoid a ticket. Yea, that's a great idea.

With the price of gas about to go to $6 and Obama trying to charge them ten times the price for their fire arms and bullets, they've got to do what they can. Don't blame them a bit. If rounding up a few drunk college students helps stop the socialist agenda then I'm all for it.

Do you mean you can't even drive through a dry county with beer in your car? That doesn't make sense at all. How do the beer trucks supply Starkville without driving through the county? All places that I know of that are dry, it's not illegal to have beer/booze in your possession (as long as it's tax stamped) but you just can't sell it.
I seriously doubt that the Sheriff's Dept would do anything that the campus police department doesn't want them to do. The University hires all the off duty local Sheriffs and police officers and pays them overtime to work game day and other sporting events. That would dry up if the University got upset with them.

Not to mention the first time some high roller gets a ticket for drinking a beer on campus, Dr. Keenum would hear about it before halftime.
As I said, dumb 17'n law. Good question about the beer trucks. I wondered the same myself. I had no open containers, I am of age, and had not had a sip of alcohol. They had a roadblock set up that day and wrote at least 5 beer possession tickets within the ten minutes that I was being given my ticket.
The reason on why beer is illegal in oktibbeha Co is that right after prohibition people wanted to keep out the rif RAF that "honkey tonks" bring in cause proper people drink wine and liquor. True story
Barbour signed a law a couple of years ago that made alcohol illegal on campuses while hosting an athletic event, and gave jurisdiction to any local PD, including county sheriffs, even if it's not their normal jurisdiction.
This rumor went around a few years ago and nothing came of it, but never doubt what local sheriffs may do when an election is coming up here in Baptist country.

I'm can't understand having dry counties anyway. What does it accomplish? Same thing with Sunday sales. You can buy alcohol here anytime, anywhere (except at the state liquor stores, and they're closed on Sundays) and there are no more drunks running around here than anywhere else.

So the beer wasn't visible. The cop asked what I had in my cooler, and thinking that I had nothing to hide, I told him. He was a young guy fresh out of trooper school and on an obvious power trip. I think he was extra pissed that I had not been drinking.

Didn't he need a "probable cause" to even ask you that
question? I'm no lawyer, but to me that's tantamount to illegally searching your car. If you'd been drunk, tipsy, or smelled of alcohol, he might have had a reason to ask.

It is illegal for you to posses alcohol in a dry county. I know, got ticketed in in Houston, MS just for having it. The reason that the beer trucks can take it through a dry county is because it is a legal product federally and in some states/counties and therefore falls under the Commerce Clause which prevents states from regulating interstate commerce. In short, you can't make it illegal to take a legal product through your county just because you don't like it.

they would send a letter telling you when the CL would be open for "stocking your locker". The poorly veiled implication was that you could bring your liquor for the season. Some people had a pretty well stocked bar in their lockers. Of course, beer wouldn't be practical.
If I remember correctly, they even had a deal with one of the liquor stores in town to come do it for you if you couldn't make the trip.
But I don't think they do that any longer. They may have had some trouble with excessive drinking and the attendant behavior. People still bring it in, but it's not officially sanctioned.

think that the County Sherrif has nly 'limited' jurisdiction on State Campus. The can be caled in to 'assist.'
Trivia .... By County law, OM campus is 'dry' for beer. If the local law enforcement enforced the 'law' as written at OM, sure would be fun to watch.

Was at Ole Miss one time and saw a guy bring a bag cooler full of ice into the south end zone club seats. Went to his locker and pulled out a 12 pack of Miller Light. Put in his cooler and drank the whole game. Was an early game and he didn't want to drink hard liquor all afternoon. Agree it's not practical, but it is possible. And I did drink a few so I ain't knocking it.
