Just found out I got it. Middle left side of back. Doesn't hurt too bad now, but does the pain get worse? Supposedly it spreads a little bit, but just glad it's no where visible.

My mother had them about 10 years ago. She's a pretty tough woman, and it about crushed her. If there is anything you can take now that the doctor says will shorten and/or minimize the impact--take it.

Good luck.

My dad got them at age 73, 3 months later he passed away.

We were pregnant at the time and to be safe he didn't ever touch my wife's belly or anything.

Always regretted that, but we named the child after him so.

Already missed out on the 48 hour window. My uncles is a doctor and he said if I would've said something early, they could've gave me something, but missed that opportunity. Will just ride it out.

My dad had them late in his life. Really kicked his ***. Best of luck with fighting them.

I had a case last year. I thought I had done something to a muscle in my back, the pain wasn't terrible, but felt like a muscle ache and for a few days it felt like someone was stabbing my arm & ripping the flesh away. The rash follows nerves that wrap from your spine around one side of your body. It gets itchy, but that wasn't bad.

The worst part was for several months after, I had crushing fatigue. I was still able to do everything, go to work, do stuff at home, exercise, but I was extremely tired all of the time. I still have itching/burning along where the rash was, but this is not constant.

The medication is an anti-viral (basically the same stuff as if you have influenza). It just shortens the time that you have the outbreak.

Freaky disease really. It comes from chickenpox virus that has been dormant in your body for decades. It somehow re-activates. Seems like science fiction.

Sorry about your dad.

So you have a daughter named Willy?

I had them about 7 or 8 years ago. I was around 40 and was told that was pretty young for Shingles. Had no idea what it was at first. A really awful burning sensation on my right side front to back. The worst of it was over in a week but it did linger for about a month if I remember correctly. I wouldn't wish that on anyone except those I hate. I'm certainly glad I got it out of the way while still young and easier to overcome.

I don't remember hearing much about Shingles until 10 years ago or so. Seems more pervasive now.

Yeah I just turned 30 and I thought that was young to get shingles. Just hoping it is a one time thing and not a recurring thing.

My brother got them last year at the age of 40. He's a physician but missed his 48 hour window as well. He's a tough SOB and I've never seen him that hurt by something. He was pretty much out of commission for 2 weeks with crippling pain and has scars all over his torso. Godspeed man wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I appreciate it. I am 2-3 days into it now. Not necessarily too painful, but more of a nuisance. I can feel it is there and it is annoying AF, but not extremely painful yet. My uncle said it could possibly spread around my side and to the front. I am sure the pain will get worse. I do feel much more fatigued and tired than normal. I guess that is a symptom.

Shingles can reoccur. Someone I work with has had multiple bouts. For me, the pain in my back felt like a pinched nerve for a few days. The fatigue was the worst part though. That lasted several months.

I had an outbreak this summer. I lucked out because it was only in a small area on my back. It did take several months before it fully healed. Once you have it, you are unlikely to have it again for several years if at all. There is also a vaccine for it that doctors recommend when you reach 50 or so.

This is what i am worried about more so than the pain. I am already starting to feel dead and I'm only 2-3 days in.

I had shingles this past June. It was somewhat painful, but I had a very mild case (only 4 sores I think, all around my left armpit area on the nerve). I was tired and achy, but nothing too bad. But I'm on the younger side for shingles (37), and in pretty good shape, so that may have helped. As others have noted, the fatigue lingered a bit and was probably the worst part for me.

Edit: sounds like you're having a similar experience. Hope you have a mild case as well.

If your d!ck goes dead, you are probably looking at permanent nerve damage. You will have painful urination (like peeing glass shards) for the rest of your days. And don't even think about sex at that point; you are essentially a eunuch. The worst thing that you can do is worry about this happening as stress will cause shingles to spread and intensify. Good luck with the next few weeks!!! ;)

I had shingles when I was 18. It wasn't a bad case, but I did have a rash that covered a good portion of the back of my neck on my right side. I don't remember a lot of muscle pain, but if anything touched the sores on my neck if felt like being stabbed with a red hot knife (which made wearing shirts suck).

there is a vaccine for shingles but they usually don't give it to anyone under 60. shingles is caused by the dormant chickenpox virus. If you had chickenpox you are always at risk for shingles. The vaccine lowers the probability of getting it but isn't fool proof. Also if you have had the vaccine and get shingles the symptoms are suppose to be much milder.

I got it when I was about 28. My wife was about 8 months pregnant and I found out my grandfather died. A day or two afterwards I started having excruciating back pain. I ended up with a rash that went from just above my waist and up close to my chest and went from the middle of my stomach and all the way around my right side to my spine.

It was worse than all of my back issues with nerve pain and ruptured discs I've had since then. I couldn't sleep for days. It also sucked that I had to deal with the pain while being a pallbearer a few days later. I basically had to wait for it to go away on it's own since I didn't get it diagnosed in time. I think it took about a week for the pain to go away and a couple of weeks for the rash to heal up.

Oh man, that sounds terrible. Sorry you had to go through all of that at once.

I had them, sucked as everyone else has said. The worse part for me was near the end it itched real bad but hurt too much to scratch. Quite the rock and hard place. Good luck, stay drunk.

never had shingles but I've been told it can be more painful the older you are when you get it.
