I know stansbury has his issues, but how do you even leave starkville without a clear plan to protect sidney from foul trouble???? We come out of the gate with him guarding green 1v 1?????? Crap, jarvis couldnt guard green, but sidney is going to tonight.

Grant had to be in shock when they threw it in to green and no double came.

There is a chance we win this game if we dont play the entire first half without him.

Pissed.

Or does anyone else think that about half the fouls they call on Sidney are ********? His defense sucks already, but it seems like every time he gives a little effort, he gets called for a foul for just putting a finger on a guy.

The firt one and third were horrendous---my issue is that stansbury knows that sid has an ultra sensitive whistle directed at him---all the more reason to not let him anywhere near trying to guard green of all people 1 on 1--its a lose-lose.

He has poor footwork due to his conditioning, which leads to poor technique. Its easy to call a foul on a guy if he isn't moving his feet or making an attempt to get in good position.

His arm wasn't straight up on the first one, and he reached in on the second one. Sure, the were ticky-tack, but it was early in the game and he reached on both.

My problem is that on the first one, he committed that foul before Green even caught the ball. He stood still and let Green go under the basket and walk in front of him to perfect post position. You just can't do that. In the post, the work on defense is done before the man catches the ball. When he catches it where Green caught it, there's little to nothing you can do. THAT'S POOR COACHING. Absolutely no way around it. On the first trip down the floor, and he didn't even jump for the tip-off, he didn't put forth the effort to keep his man from getting position. Laziness, and POOR COACHING. The coaches should know that he's prone to fouling, and good teams (esp. Bama) will exploit that, so he has to do the work before the ball goes in.

/off soapbox now. </p>

I also think about half of the fouls they call on Sidney are crap. Fair or not, it seems that every ref crew is calling everything they can call on Sidney. <div>
</div><div>I'm not making excuses for Sidney because I think he got himself into this predicament. I also see so much that he can do to improve his game. But, there is no denying that the refs have a quick whistle when it comes to Sidney.</div>

Correct, it's all about position. Sidney's shown that if he actually has position on his man before the ball comes in, he's lockdown because the other guy just can't move him. He's just too lazy, whether due to conditioning or otherwise, to take and keep position when his man posts up. Because of that, when the ball comes in and he tries to recover, the ref isn't ever going to give him the benefit of the doubt, hence the sensitive whistle.

It seems to me that its his technique that is getting him called. Picture Jarvis covering someone in the post. He stays a bit off of them and goes up after the ball when the shooter puts it up. Sidney rarely gets off the floor much. He puts his hands up and moves into the shooter resulting in contact before the shot even leaves the shooter's hands. I'm far from an expert, but that's just what I see.

Exactly....His problem is moving into the shooter when they go up for the shot. He has to learn the happy medium of contesting the shot but not bumping them.

Officials are going to call the game, but when a player puts on the kind of show he does when he gets called for a foul, it probably doesn't help his cause too much... sometimes, it will give them more incentive to whistle him for ticky-tack stuff. <div>
</div><div>Also, he is out of position a lot. Basketball is about effort to stay in position to guard the shot. You will get whistled for a reach in every time if you are standing beside the guy and stick your arm in his way.</div>

He's keeping his arms straight for the most part, but keeps driving his hips into people and that's what's getting him the calls. That's what he did on the 1st and 2nd.

The 3rd was bogus.

He did the same thing in the FL game for a few of his fouls.
