Russell has been told by the coaches that he will NOT redshirt in the fall. This comes from a guy I work with that talked to Tyler yesterday.

i think lee still starts, but russell plays, and will likely play more as the season moves on. redshirting would be great, but if he's going to have to start in 2010, would you rather have a sophomore who played significant minutes or a redshirt freshman?

around here regarding him red shirting vs. playing? I just assumed that he would get the shirt. If you're going to struggle either way, why risk the injury? Can he get more Ws than Lee and Co.? I think he'll be a very good QB down the road, but throwing a freshman in there before he's ready might hurt his development more than help it. I guess you can't really fault Mullen for wanting to see "his" guys on the field, though.

don't think we're going to have that luxury. If he's a better QB than Lee this fall, then he needs to play this fall. And if Lee gets hurt, he's definitely going to have to play this fall. Crxxm's legacy is going to haunt us in 2013, when Russell should be a redshirt SR.

be a better QB than Lee, but I don't think he has enough of a supporting cast for that to translate in to wins this year. If he stays healthy and actually becomes comfortable in the offense instead of running for his life, it will be valuable experience. I just don't know if I'd be comfortable risking our QB of the future in a rebuilding year when expectations aren't that high anyway. Again, though, Mullen seems to be frustrated with the Croom holdovers, and maybe they simply cannot make his system work, thus the need for Russell to play.

I would believe that Lee should start the season off but if TR is needed I do not think Mullen will not hesitate to use him...I do not think that playing Tyler will waste a red shirt...the kid needs to prove himself and the sooner he does the faster our program can begin to grow...if he steps out there and gets the job done just think what kind of credit Mullen and his staff will receive...and hopefully future recruits will see what kind of football to expect from this University

And Mullen called him over and was showing him the coverages that our D were in. He was also talking with coach Hud the entire time and lsitening in on the plays as well. I don't think there is any doubt that Tyler will be playing next year.

Some of you are just doubting he can do it. believe me he is getting coaching on the side just not reps in practice.

If Tyler Russell is our best QB this fall, he needs to start. And how would we be "risking" him if we did? If anything, we'll be in better shape for 2010 if he does start this fall. He'd be a SO with game experience vs. a RS-FR who's never stepped on the field.
