Long story short, I will be furloughed through Mid - July beginning next Thursday. While submitting my hours for the pay period, I accidentally clocked out 20 minutes late last Friday. My boss texted me this afternoon and asked me to go in and correct it. I mean I understand being accurate about logging time, but come on man, I'm about to be unemployed for the next few months. It was 20 freaking minutes. Not to mention being preached to about how the big wigs are here for us and that our jobs are safe, only to receive a furlough notice the same week.

Don't think I want to work for this company again but probably won't have a choice. Just a number, not people to these corporations.

Enjoy your time off. Hell I know people permanently out of work.

He’s gonna get shamed for picking liberal arts isn’t he?

I've got that feeling and I'm reserving whether I give a **** or not, on his answer.

With all his experience, I would think companies would be beating down his door for an essential employee.

I’m sorry you have to suffer through substantial unemployment and stimulus check for a temporary period of time to prevent your company from going bankrupt, those a-holes.

I think short changed would be terminated. They're still paying your benefits and you can come back, right? That's generally furlough.

I of course dont know what you do, but it could be it's hard, as it is for many, to make revenue that pays the Bill's at the current moment.

They could keep paying you, go in the red, then not have a company that will last past the pandemic. Money just doesnt exist from nowhere.

I'd blame china, not your employer, for covering up a pandemic for weeks.

Tough times, but no one owes you anything. You sound like a union guy. If 20 minutes of pay matters that much to you maybe you should rethink your career path. Good luck!!

Well if it’s going to break a company to pay for an extra 20 minutes you may be right. He may need to find a different company

I want to be on your side, and I do hope you do okay but you admit that you wrongly recorded your time. I just can't see it as a wrong on your bosses part wanting it corrected. To have left it alone would more or less be stealing from the company. A boss that would allow that isn't going to be a boss very long.

Your title says you were short-changed suggesting that you were cheated but your message tells a story of the opposite.

Why is it greedy for a company to want to pay someone for how much they’ve worked but not greedy for an employee to want to be paid for time he never put in?

How do you clock out 20 minutes late? Did you just sit around BS'ing for 20 minutes after working, forget to clock out and have to go back?? If that's the case, they don't owe you. If you worked until you were done and then clocked out, they should owe you the 20 minutes.

Did you mean to say that you clocked in 20 min late? That would make more sense with your title. If you clocked out late, then I don't see how they owe you for that.

I maintained payroll/hours for a big corporation for many years. If you worked over for 20 minutes, they owe you the time; if you simply forgot to clock out on time, and admitted that, then your boss was correct in asking you to go in and self correct the error.

You're admittedly young, fresh out of college for all intents and purposes, so you should take the opportunity to look for a better job while you are being paid while off. JMO and humble advice OP.

tough to be laid off, regardless of age, but if the company is still paying for your benefits, count your blessings
being without insurance or paying COBRA, is very expensive
