Rutgers shot just 5 out of 64 shots (7.8%) from the midrange despite their inefficiencies at the rim.

Intrigued to see if this is an offensive philosophy shift from Pike and Co., or if tougher defensive competition forces the offense back into poorer shot selection.

Will post the shot chart after every game for those interested!

its the complete model working across the NCAAs the past few years and has worked. We ended up with 81pts yet went on what a 14mins scoring drought or something in the first half

It was a huge part of the inefficiencies of last years team on offense.
Rim 414-685 60.4%, 828 on 685 shots 120.9
Mid 220-551 39.9%, 440 pts on 551 shots 79.9
3pt 230-700 32.9%:, 690 pts on 700 shots 98.6

Mid ranges taken,
Dylan 25-81, 50 pts/81 61.7
Ace 92-200, 184 pts/200 92.0
Lathan 38-96, 76 pts/96 79.2
Acuff 14-40, 28/40 70.0
JMike 9-37, 18/37 48.6

551 / 1936 = 28.46% of your total shots were inefficient takes last year, I think it should be 20-25%, if that.

6 games were lost by 5pts or less, difference between 15-16 and 19-12 to 21-10.
4-19 vs Kenn St 77-79
14-28 vs Alabama 90-95
6-15 vs TA&M 77-81
10-12 vs Princeton 82-83
4-14 Michigan 63-66
12-27 Michigan 82-84

Take a few of those makes behind the 3pt line or misses to within 5 feet(60%) and you win 4 to 6 more in 24-25.

Edit... Found an article, 21.8% according to this stats guy.

It's a couple years old but that's why offenses are getting so much more proficient YoY. Analytics.

Based on analytics, they took the shots they should be taking. They obviously need to improve on shooting at the rim. Part of it is likely opening night jitters. Part of it will be making sure the right players are taking shots at the rim and the right players are taking 3s. Very impressive at how well they followed what was most likely the game plan.

Appreciate the information as it is important and glad to see very little of bad 2’s. However , if we have someone cooking from 2 and hits 5/5 from 13-15 feet , I will take that all day. You cannot fall in love with analytics and forget what wins games, putting the ball in the hoop.
I am sure it was charted and discussed elsewhere but the layups and dunks missed was atrocious. That has to get better. If it was this bad against Rider , it will not become easier against BIG 10 opponents. The missed dunks or missed alley oops should never happen. The best layup and drive was by Buchanan who took the bump and hit the layup. We need more of those.

My favorite drive was the 3 point shot fake by Grant followed by a lightening quick drive to the basket and explosive dunk before any Rider player was able to react.

Speaking of YoY analytics, I was curious to compare this game to last year’s first game.

To start the 24/25 season, we beat Wagner 75-52, and get this — we only had 2 (!) offensive rebounds.

While we gave up far too many offensive rebounds to Rider, at least we had 17 ORebs of our own.

Regardless of talent, you’d have to say we’re off to a better start this year (greater margin of victory, playing more like a team, better on the offensive glass, higher level of energy and effort, etc.).

Will be interesting to see how we progress through the first 5 games and into the Vegas tournament compared to last season.

Midrange shooting is a lost art. The 3 level scorer has disappeared.
Not in the pro game. Shai and Jalen Brunson are 2 of the best mid range shooters occasionally shot g threes but they live and die with the 13-15 foot jumper. Wish we had someone who could hit that all day.

Kevin Durant, too. He's made a career in the midrange.
