should Mullen implement The Pistol?

Its the new fad. The half shotgun snap with a back directly behind the QB. It seems to be having success around college football. UCLA beat Texas with it last Saturday. Nevada, Indiana and a few other schools have run a majority of their offense through it

Should Mullen put in a wrinkle with the pistol formation ? There is no reason why we shouldnt run a few plays with it , especially if we are having trouble running the ball. Tyler could really throw out of it better beacuse it really sets up the pass for the QB as well. I saw OK State run it a couple of times last night, and until defenses knowhow to prepare for it , it wouldnt hurt

And it enhances play action.

Our problem is that nobody will really buy play action until we've got someone back there who is truly able to throw it without shitting the bed under pressure.

You could run the speed option out of it with the tailback or run the read with the wing back in motion.

is give you a couple of I formation plays out of the shotgun against the defense. The TB gets to start deeper and run downhill like an I-tailback does.

and we did run it 4-5plays in the Georgia game, all in the second half. We opened up the first two plays in the second half in it , both direct handoffs to Ballard for a gain of about2 and a gain of about5. We never did throw out of it , and the longest play in it was a draw to Ballard on 3rd and long after Ralphs fumble in the backfield, but we still had to punt

to cut out any tendencies you might have depending on what side your back lines up in . Really has a solid use in that respect. We are just a regular spread team though. We throw it probably 70 percent of the time. I could see it being a good formation for Relf.

and I think that would have been better for AD last year to use a little more...Ballard looks like he could run pretty well out of it...I'd like the misdirection you could run out of it without giving away a tendency like you do with a back on either side

That's my one regret about leaving coaching- there has been an offensive revolution going on in HS the last 5 years and I got out just as it was starting

Same as singelback formation like the broncos used to do and Saban has always done except the QB is in short shotgun. You could call it shotgun I formation as C34 said.

I like how the quarterback reverse pivots and the lineman still pull on play action pass to sell the run .

I'm a big fan of the pistol as a formation, not as an offense. In other words, use it 5-10 times a game not 70 percent of your snaps like some do...
