Should Mullen start Tyler Russell next year?

I like Russell as much as any State fan right now, but he'll still be a freshman quarterback in the SEC. If he looks better than Lee and Relf in the preseason, give him a shot. But I'd love to see him redshirt and get four solid years.

A year for him to learn and then 4 to play will hopefully get MSU back on the right track. All assuming, of course, that Russell pans out. I liked what I saw last Friday though and think Coach Mullen will definitely make him better. It is very exciting to know that we may actually have good quarterback play here at MSU soon. That's something I almost never thought I'd see.

It may hurt a little next year, but when year four and five get here, it will be worth it. I'd say Russell and all the frosh will be the difference in more games in year 5 than they will in year one. As I recall, this was Jim Grobe's secret to winning the ACC at Wake.

If we add a few more of the big names, there will be a solid group of players in this class that can really contribute right away. I'm all for building for the future, but not to the extent of sacrificing a season. We'll need a few of these guys next year.

I doubt that. You may say no now but 6 games in you will be screaming for him. He may not be the starter for the JState game but he will be the starter at some point next year.

I remember how I was blasted here before this season when I said Lee would be our starter after 3 games. I was a game off. I can't believe so many people where on the Carroll band wagon. Russell would have been the best QB on our team LAST YEAR. He has to play. We have no other options besides a 5'9 170 pound guy that trys his *** off but doesn't have the physical tools to get it done and a waste of a 6'4 225 frame in Relf.

...if this recruiting class holds together and we can add Bumphis and Patterson, among others, you are going to see quite a few freshmens playing next year. This offense will require a lot of skill players, and aside from Elliot (coming off serious injury), Delmon Robinson, and Clark, we don't have a lot of it. I could envision a scenario where Russell is #2 behind Lee, but I still think he's going to play next year.

Yes, he plays next year. There is no doubt he has more ability thant Lee and Relf. He could have started this past year. Our O line will be better and this type of offensive scheme will lend itself to him getting clobbered much less than the scheme we have been forced to watch.

let's see... Relf sux, Carrol is gone, Lee is a midget, and Tyler Russell is already 10 times better than any other QB we have. How in the hell don't you start him?

off that shat you are smokin'. Please tell me how you figure that? Hell after the shelling they took up North a few weeks back most are probably in mental rehab! We don't have any depth and Looney is reportly transferring. Dam 90 I hope you never wake up from that dream!

<font face="Georgia" size="2">"All I know is, the team up north has to come down here, and there's going to be a lot of ringing going on in this stadium," Mullen said. "So, I'm looking forward to next Thanksgiving."</font>

it's outdated and disturbing. I know mine sucks but that's the point. Yours just makes me think about what Croom did when we handed him his buy out check.

Don't sweat DJ Looney. The fat guy that drys the floor at basketball games can block better than him.

yeah, I can see him playing a lot. Now if Mullen snags a junior college guy that is worth a crap, maybe Russell could be red shirted. But I doubt it.

This line becomes immediately better due to a different scheme that will allow them to play up to more potential and not down. Are they talented, NO. This line would have performed better this year if they could have run the "type" of offense we will see next year.

.....stated before that I felt like next year would be a struggle, no matter who the coach is, and I still stick by that. I have no issue with letting Mullen use next year to install and perfect his schemes, and get Russell ready for primetime in 2010.

of the season anyway. Maybe later if he proves he can handle the job. But Russell needs the experience for the 2010 season. We don't need a freshman, redshirt or not, starting in 2010 as I expect MSU to be competitive in 2010.

We might only have him three years, look at the number of freshmen playing in the SEC. Reading about the offense on smartfootball, it's not as complicated as you might think. </p>

As someone said, we're going to have a lot of young skill players that we will have to throw into the fire. Tyler Russell is probably more familiar throwing the ball to those guys than Lee or Relf. Russell is also very familiar with this offense. Just being a Fr., he will struggle at times, but we have Lee who would be a good back-up.

I think JSU will be a good opponent for him to start off with because they are a I-AA team, so he won't be staring down the UF Gators defense when he takes his first snaps.

The playmakers should play regardless of classification. We can't have the mindset that we can only get good players only every 4 years. Hopefully, each year we can pick up playmakers to compliment our offense.

I would like to see Russell redshirt, but with Carroll transferring I don't think that will be possible. But he will be the backup next fall and then start for 3 years.

but I'd like to see what Lee can do in a spread O behind an offensive line (probably wishful thinking) that can protect him. I think Itawamba ran a wide open offense when he was there, and he set national records (JuCo, I know, but still). I know his size is an issue, but he is talented.

But, based on what I've seen of Tyson Lee and Tyler Russell this fall, Lee will keep the starting job. Russell will be the best QB we've had since Don Smith, but he'll still be a true freshman next fall.

With him all passes of 20+ yards or more are null and void. I saw nothing from Lee that made me think he was better than Russell. You want Russell to come in green in 2010? I don't. Let him earn his stripes this year and establish himself as the leader of this team.

The best guys in the state this year and next year want to play with Russell not Lee.

I have a lot of respect for Lee. He plays his *** off and wants to win but he is extremely limited in what he can do because of his size.

I see Lee starting possibly past/up to the GTech game and then Russell takes over.

And in case you haven't seen Florida's offense, their passing game consists of a LOT of short crossing routes and rollouts which don't require a tremendously strong arm. Lee is also a good runner, which will fit in well with Mullen's offense.

Don't get me wrong, I like Tyler Russell a lot. But he's nowhere near ready to start in the SEC as a true freshman.

little help from the pick6). Sure, conventional wisdom says that redshirting Russell is the "right way to do things" but these are not conventional times. Mullen is here to bring the winning ways back and to do that you need your best people on the field. Winning breeds winning and recruiting will become much easier each successful year. Forget the mentality of reloading every 4 or 5 years, for a consistent winner it is imperative that we reload each year with top talent.

Yeah we'd like to have Russell 5 years. Who wouldn't...

But think about this. In a few years, signing QB's like Russell out to be the norm for us. We've got Coach Dan The Man Mullen on our sidelines now. We expect him to succeed. If we get just a couple good successful years out of Russell, signing QBs should no longer be a problem for us. Its not like we have to milk Russell for all he's worth - we shouldn't have to wait until he has children to sign another good QB.

...if he is the best QB we have, and we have a line that can protect him, I say yes. If he is the best QB we have and there is no decent pass protection, I say no. I'd rather redshirt him, while we build the offensive line, than risk getting him hurt.

Russell will play next year. At what capacity he plays will be determined by his fall practice. We are not deep enough at QB to redshirt him next year.
