SI: Pro Scouts skeptical Mr Football will translate in NFL

Pretty harsh in places. "We haven't scouted him," says one general manager, "but if you ask me today, I would say his game doesn't translate to the NFL. When you see him play, he doesn't have the poise you want at the position. You're like, What's he doing? He plays like a combination of Jeff Garcia and Brett Favre. He's running and jumping all over the place, then he's like, Whatever. We might be sitting here next year, like, 'Whoa! He got his s---together.' But right now he doesn't translate." http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/deta...a=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ==#db=mih&AN=85834576

Fran Tarkenton was probably the last great scrambling style QB in the NFL for a reason ... these days it's like ten million dollars running around on 2 legs and GM's don't like that

Exactly right. It's not about whether or not a player can do it or not in the NFL. It's about whether they will be allowed to do it and as long as teams are handing out $120M contracts to QBs, they won't be doing much running. We'll see how much the Niners continue to use their pistol offense once Kaepernick gets his payday after this coming season.

I think he will do fine in the NFL

As a slot receiver. I think he could be the next Wes Welker if he can catch.

He's pretty accurate though. That's something that always translates. I remember in the Bama game, he was making some very impressive throws. I don't think he's going to be a great pro-QB, but that doesn't mean he isn't one of the best college QBs in quite some time.

Dude is going to rewrite the SEC record book if he stays for 3 more yearse.

Tarkenton was in the league for a good while - lets see how long

those guys mentioned are before you crown them as heirs apparent ... even Cam Newton has been bridled by management

Time will tell. The three of them have one good season so far. Let's revisit the subject in about five years.

That's a good point. Russell Wilson and Kaepernick are doing well. They are both somewhat heavier than JM, but not more than 20 pounds. RGIII and his injuries is an argument against a small QB doing a lot of running, though I think he should never have been allowed to play hurt. I've heard there is concern JM has problems going deep, which has the pros worried. As a freshman, I'd imagine he can still get a lot more arm strength.

I hope the scouts think enough of him to convince him he needs to turn pro after this season. After the A&M game this year, I hope Johnny Football never sees Starkville again.

They will always look at Michael Vick. Small fast QB...but constantly hurt because he takes so many hits.

We have no idea how tough Johnny Football is because he rarely takes hits. He always seems to squirm out of the contact.

We will see what he is made of the first time he gets tatooed by a LB going full steam

the thing with kaepernick and cam newton is that they are so big, much bigger than vick, russell, and rg3. that probably increases their shelf life as a running QB. johnny football is not a big guy.

that said, i don't think russell is a true running QB like the others. he's capable of running, but he's more of a buy time/scramble in the backfield to let his WRs get open kinda guy. more like a rodgers type. if manziel can develop into that kinda running threat, he has a future. rg3 is also going to have to turn into that kinda QB. make them respect the run and burn them if they don't, but don't actually run it all that often.
