Who is going to be the punter this year? I know its really early to start talking about but I was just wondering. Lightbourn?

I like the idea but I'd rather see his number on everyone's uniform in some sort of fashion. A patch or helmet. . But I love the idea of sending 10 out on the first punt and taking a delay of game. I'm sure Fresno State coach would be a good enough guy to decline the penalty too but at least the team makes a point.

Gotcha, I think their point was have the 27 on all uniforms this season, but going forward always have the punter be #27. Like the delay of game idea for Fresno, too.

Hoenstly, I would rather just name an award after him and present it to Huskers that embody what Sam stood for. In the immediate future wearing the #27 would be way too much pressure, especially for a 19 year old kid like Lightbourn.

This kind of move might be good for the fans, but I don't think it would be good for future punters down the road who never knew Sam Foltz. If I'm a punter and want to wear my number from High School, I'm not considering Nebraska if my number wasn't 27.

I just don't think this is a viable idea long term, although I could easily be wrong...

I really like what someone suggested earlier -- 1st punt of the season send 10 out in punt formation minus the punter and take a delay of game
That seems like a nice way for the team to honor him, but there should be something more permanent beyond that-whether it's a statue or something else.

Is there a delay of game on a fumble? Screw the delay of game! Hike the ball and have the center roll it back 15 yards.... Ask the other team to let it sit for 27 seconds before they or we down it.... Sacrifice the 50 yards and go from there.

This isn't happening anytime soon. They may take the 5-yard penalty by putting just 10 players on the field, and wear #27 stickers on their helmets, but they aren't going to snap the ball back to empty space.

I'm probably going to get ripped apart for this and it's not my intention to start anything, but can we just slow down alittle on who can come up with the most creative way to honor Sam Foltz? I'm sure the university will do something nice and tasteful to honor #27 this season. But four parents lost a child this past weekend and havn't even had a chance to bury them yet. How about we let their family, friends and teammates griev and reflect on things alittle instead of worrying so much about erecting statues and designating jerseys numbers right now. I'm sure everyone's heart is in the right place but can we just keep things in perspective alittle bit. Just my thoughts.

I would say a small sticker "#27" on back of the helmet for the season would be appropriate.

I think we did that before. or someone did.

Have all future Husker starting punters wear #27. I like it.

I was thinking statue of the pic of the kid looking up to him as he runs. It would have a much higher meaning of being a role model and hero to kids. Perhaps another purpose would be to recognize how important walk-ons are to the history and culture of the program.

I see what you are saying and originally I was of the opinion that maybe people should hold off on discussions about how to honor him for awhile. I think we can all agree that none of us can really know or comprehend the depth of grief his family is going through right now, as well as that of his friends and teammates and of course we must be sensitive to that. But although it's far less compared to anything they are feeling, the tragedy has touched us all as fans, even those of us who didn't know him or never met him and I think people feel kind of helpless and wish there was something they could do to help, and at this point, talking about ways to honor him is all they feel they can do. As long as people don't think their idea is the end all be all and nothing else is good, I think it's a positive way of people dealing with it. I'm sure in due time an appropriate way to honor him will be done in accordance with the wishes and ideas of his family and teammates, but until then, I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing it.

I wish I knew who came up with this in order to give proper credit
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the idea isn't original at least as far as college football goes. USC did it in 2007 in their season opener on an extra point after their placekicker died in a car accident...
