SIAP... Offensive problems this year

After going back through a few games and comparing to last year, I noticed something that stuck out.

Sellers was a new commodity last year. Only Loggains knew what he had and he game-planned well with a mobile qb who could also make quick throws and occasionally hit a big one. When things broke down, Sellers made a lot of plays with his feet.

This year, d-coordinators, especially in the SEC caught up. They realized he's not a big threat in terms of making quick decisions, quickly finding an open receiver and delivering the ball accurately (all those damn high throws over the middle have been killers). Last year, the RPO rarely worked.

So... this year they realized the best defense is to rush him quickly and force him to make a decision while keeping a spy on him. Also, cover the short throws so he can't get the ball out quickly. The O-line didn't help, but between the play calls (not designed well enough for Sellers' strengths) and Sellers' shortcomings, we see what we've got.

CCU did the same, but they simply don't have the players that SEC teams do. So many plays looked the same, but we just got past and around their less-athletic players - with both Sellers men and a few other players. Watch how many times Sellers scrambled in the CCU game.

Clem will be ready.

Opposing defenses putting a spy on him was a major factor. Sometimes, as against Ole Miss, they had two spies. We didn't have enough offensive weapons to keep the opposing D honest, so they could devote one or two spies to Sellers.

Clemson has weak DB's and has struggled against the run on the DL.

We have to run sellers, imo. To keep the pressure off him. If their DL isn't attacking, we should have suc ess on their DB's.

Can we do it?

The way Sellers went absolutely nuts on them last year, I have to imagine they are simply not going to allow him to get loose this year.

One would think. But if we try to win with drop back passing, we are in trouble.

I would run sellers and force them to stop our best weapon.

I would think Sammy Brown stays on the field this year on every down, that would be one adjustment, to counter his running, that we will see in 25 vs 24.

And i don't know, I have not watched them this year, is Brown a 3 down LB this year? I know last year a lot Clemson fans were scratching there heads why they took him out, last year, given Sellers propensity to run.

To me, the problem is we took away the quick decisions, getting him out of the pocket, and the QB run game (Beamer admitted the lack of a QB run game).

We tried to get him to stand on the pocket and read defenses. Does’t work real well without solid OL play and/or running game.

He is at his best when he is allowed to create.

What happened to Augustave at RB, 4-star receiver Jordan Gidron, and 4-star receiver Lex Cyrus. Should have played Donovan Darden a lot this year. My fear is he departs and he is going to be better than Fred. Fred missed the tackle on 4th and 12 on A&M QB in first drive of second half. After that the flood gate opened. Still miffed by how badly he missed him. I think we need to play the freshman more. What is next year's defense going to look like. Who is going to be left at DB? We lack depth already. Or D-end for that matter. Who is left if/when Stewart leaves and BT Jr leave? no other backups have emerged. I thought Hardy would have been a force this year. oh well. Call our defense next year "2nd and 2."

Dabo kind of did us some favors the last 2 wins. In 2022, Shipley was killing us, but Dabo weirdly didn't have him in some critical, late game situations. Then last year Brown was off the field when some big things happened for us.

Don't be sorry about posting something that has already been discussed OPie. My view is that it's mostly on the OL and OC (who is the OL coach's supervisor)...if QB doesn't have a full second to even hit a screen, not sure how it's his fault. He certainly took too many lost yardage plays by holding the ball too long. However, if he sees a LB or CB that's probably blitzing and has zero confidence that his center/guards or RBs can make the block, he's already pretty much doomed. I'm not a sunshine pumper, quite the opposite. But putting the majority of this on Sellers and defensive adjustments over the off season is a stretch.
